Oldskool fandom dickery

Does anyone who is, well, older, have memories of the Usenet era (or better yet, the zine era) in which fans were just as pissy and nasty and stupid as they are now? It would make me feel better.

Yes, I have memories of Usenet and 'zines. No, sorry, even Doctor Who fandom during the JNT Coat-of-Horrors era wasn't as vituperative as it is right now. There has definitely been an upkick in that behaviour.

+1 though tbf it's not entirely unwarranted. Nor was the vituperation unwarranted, during JNT's attempts to actively kill the show. At present, Moffat & Co just seem to be unintentionally rendering DW completely unwatchable to anyone save those living with unmedicated ADHD.

Yeah, your comment is exactly the type of hysterical bullshit I'm talking about. Fuck off and watch something else.

nayrt

I really don't see what's hysterical about it. Someone doesn't like something you like? That's hysterical?

I remember usenet for ST: TNG. This was back in the day when people MSTed/mocked other peoples fics openly and advertised it. I'm pretty sure that kind of thing wouldn't fly in fandom now (or would be called bullying) so there's always been dickery, it just changes shape.

I remember some petty flame wars in the Elfquest mailing list back in '97 or so. Mostly they were fans of a particular character defending them against haters, with varying degrees of maturity. I remember one whiny defender who took it personally when they found out others didn't like their fave, and cried and whined about it on the mailing list.

Then there was the fan who misread a particular page and kept wanting to talk about their interpretation of canon and how it changed things. Even when canon's co-creator spoke up to tell the guy he was wrong, he didn't stop insisting.

I also remember a discussion wondering of lesbians found a female character in sexy clothing and pose as alluring as the male fans did. I wish I remembered the consensus of that one. I think the mods shut it down before anything fun really happened.

The odd troll appeared, though they were just "flamers" back then. Normal fans complained about late issues or the perceived downfall of quality in writing and printing, repeated demands for information about the movie (that never happened, BTW), and lots of discussion.

I think I glossed over most of the wank, but I do think it's more prevalent now. We've become used to being very vocal online and not hiding as much, and of course now more people are online than ever. More people means more chances for wank.

Ah, memories...

ElfQuest was kind of a concentrated wankstorm vortex, though. I kind of side-eye the Pinis, because they always had some sort of drama swirling around them - at least, back when I was following EQ, which is admittedly, quite a while ago. I think I finally fell off the wagon completely post-Shards.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the whole Wavedancers controversy. I think since Richard was on the EQ mailing list, he kept that wank storm out of general knowledge. IIRC some Cease and Desist letters were sent around to quell it, though don't quote me on that. I did end up buying the mini-series the original Wavedancers writer/artists published about their experience, though. I have it in a box somewhere.

I read EQ through the graphic novels, and didn't discover that the new comics were being published until almost the ending of the Shards/New Blood/Jink/whatever Ember's spinoff was. I kept reading through New EQ, with the different storylines all in the same magazine, like a mini manga phonebook. Then THAT ended, and so did my reading. I think the final quest is finally being put out online, though I haven't read a page, and I missed the whole Red Masque thing.

EQ helped me overcome my disdain of comics, so I can't give up on it completely. I still have all my GNs and single issues. I even found a copy of Fantasy Quarterly.

Yes, Wavedancers, and then there was some wackiness going on between Richard Pini and Colleen Doran. I remember him trying to explain the controversy to some magazine, and Colleen Doran's response was along the lines of not even wanting to engage, but she just wanted them to leave her alone. I vaguely recall (but cannot accurately quote) what I thought to be somewhat trollish behaviour by Richard Pini even on their own mailing lists.

In any case, I really loved the original graphic novels, and it was my first exposure to comics (Betty & Veronica excepted). The follow-ups I liked, but slightly less so. But I feel like there was this point where the series was on the cusp of actually expanding into something much bigger - Wavedancers was a part of that - but the Pinis would not/could not relinquish control, and instead of evolving, their whole universe just kind of sank back into a status quo at best.

I've thought for years they should forget about the ElfQuest movie they wanted to make - someone should give us a behind-the-scenes tell all, because I think it would be fascinating.

I just googled Colleen Doran and A Distant Soil and remembered hearing about the whole mess here on f!s at some point. It does seem Richard is kinda...grabby, on occasion. The wiki article about ADS lists some references to zine articles from the 80s. Interesting.

I agree with your 2nd paragraph, and why things fell apart. Either the Pinis should have kept only one story going under their direct control, or gone with all the different ones and learned to delegate. *sigh* But the shiny movie distracted them, and then that even happened.

TBH, I lost interest in the movie when they bragged that it would be CGI. I much prefer traditional animation. And then that preview image they released of Cutter gave him FIVE FINGERS. *headdesk* Makes me kind of glad no film ever came out of it. :P

BTW, my library happens to have A Distant Soil. I just requested it. C:

Usenet era here, and yes. "Flamewars" were common, and phrases like "welcome to my killfile" (or simply *plonk*) would echo throughout the land... The main difference is that Usenet skewed toward an older demographic and a lot of the posts had proper spelling/grammar.

The inability to adequately killfile people is one of the greatest tragedies in this new internet. Web 1.0's greatest innovation was the killfile, not being able to in every iteration ever since is a nightmare.

Off-topic, but when I first read your title, I read it as 'dickables' like from that Dr.Tran episode

Usenet. alt.tv.x-files. I can tell you some tales. I hit the group at about the same time X-Files was becoming wildly popular, and so there were literally thousands of messages per day, with everything from straight-up spam, to BNFs and wannabe BNFs, to seriously out-there conspiracy theorists, to everyone in between. Flamewars? Yeah, there were a few. Though I can only recall the ones I was involved in. :-P

The Sailor Moon and Slayers drama... :/ I came in toward the end of it all, but yes I remember it too.
