I agree with anon above that people who seem genuinely friendly and kind can turn out to be really nasty once you get to know them better, and awkward people can turn out to be great.

I also think it's possible to learn to be friendly. I was very unfriendly, closed-off and judgemental for years, partly as a way of coping with anxiety and partly because I wanted to seem or be smarter than other people. When I grew up a little and realized what I was doing, I learned to be friendly.

It took some time to make the transition, but it's not an act (any more than my unfriendliness was an act), it's just how I am now. But if you'd asked me when I was seventeen to stop being a cynical asshole to everyone, I would have said, "You can't change me, this is just how I am."
