I was very unfriendly, closed-off and judgemental for years, partly as a way of coping with anxiety and partly because I wanted to seem or be smarter than other people. When I grew up a little and realized what I was doing, I learned to be friendly.
It took some time to make the transition, but it's not an act (any more than my unfriendliness was an act), it's just how I am now. But if you'd asked me when I was seventeen to stop being a cynical asshole to everyone, I would have said, "You can't change me, this is just how I am."
