I'm just curious where that belief came from because it seems random. With as huge as anime fandom is, I'm surprised no one ever told you the proper meaning.

Probably because "chan" by itself means underage.

I always had an impression that "chan" was used for underage more outside the anime fandom than inside it. Inside anime it's probably used more as a diminutive honorific.

I never mentioned anime. There are other genres from Japan than just anime.

I saw the term "chan" used widely for underage art in the Harry Potter Japanese fandom about 10 years ago. I had some very nasty surprises so I grew to be extremely wary of that word. I don't speak Japanese so I wasn't aware "chan" had other meanings as well.

"Shota" is what's used these days, I think. I'm not entirely sure as I try to avoid that whole area.

English honorifics ~ Sir, Mr., Mrs., Madam, Miss, Master etc.

Japanese ~ Chan, Kun, San, Samma, Sensei, Japanese honorifics are gender neutral and can be use for either sex and are used after the name.
