Parents are people.

I think a lot of authors forget this when writing fic -- even for non-abusive, "generic" parents. But when parents are abusive, they're usually written as one-dimensional villains who are just there to induce angst in the protagonist.

Parents are just as flawed and complex as their children and their actions are shaped by what they experienced growing up. When I realized that, it made it a lot easier to deal with my own father (although he wasn't abusive).

You can like both!

Why? Especially because it seemed most likely to be neglect-related abuse. Hard to tell what the war did to him. Hard to tell what losing his wife did. (I have no firm belief one way or the other about this.)

I have nothing to contribute other than that your choice of picture is perfect.

"These abs! They are...a work of art."

TBH I never really liked the "abusive" Howard genre. Give me more "PTSD/shellshocked Howard from a different set of social norms who does his best but his best isn't right for Tony", but abusive!Howard... It falls on the same level as abusive!Odin for me, and I just have a hard time buying it.

+1

It actually reminds me of the "Thranduil raped poor Legolas" cliché in LOTR fics, back in the good old days. I may even feel a little bit nostalgic.

That sounds... Interesting.

Um.

Yeah, I'm glad I don't read a lot of Tolkien fanfic, haven't run into that. O_O

Lucky you, I guess :)

It used to be everywhere back when LOTR was huge, say 2000-2004. Yeah, it was interesting since it was often a warming that the fic was going to be kinda horrible. Then again, I love bad fics, so... Too bad the abusive!Odin or abusive!Howard fics tend to be more boring than really bad, though.

Ah, that would explain it; in 2000~2004 I was 7~11 years old. Not really reading fanfics or watching LotR. |D

Yeah, it's like a soda machine, put in abuse, get out woobie ness, and it's so rote and cliche that it's just dull. :/ Like, at this point, I kind of want to read an AU were, IDK, Frigga is abusive to Loki, but in a manipulative Mother Goethel-esque way, because even if it makes no sense, at least it's something new.

Samesies. You see parents trying and failing in real life all the time. I don't see why it isn't in fic so much.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
In comics, he's canonically an abusive alcoholic, which is where a lot of those fics came from. In MCU it now looks like he was more neglectful than actually abusive but nobody really knew more than a few bitter remarks from Tony until IM2 came out.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That little filmclip in IM2 left me with an indelible headcanon that Howard was older and set in his ways when Tony was born and he just had no idea how to cope with or relate to this small and bewildering creature he loved dearly. So he left his mother and staff to do the raising, maintained a manly distance, and vaguely hoped they'd be friends when Tony was an adult. Even when parents are doing the best they can, there can be lots of reasons why that "best" isn't what a particular kid needs, and I figure an older dad obsessed by his work and haunted by the war wouldn't exactly be a comforting figure to a bright, sensitive kid like Tony probably was.

Ugh, I instantly lose interest in a fix if it goes down the abusive!howard route.
It just seems like a cheap way to get some manpain from Tony. And considering how many actual traumatizing things Tony went though, it just seems useless.
The only Avengers who had an actual abusive parent is Clint and Bruce and I guess Natasha too. Making a parent (even if theyre fictional.) out to be a horrible abusive monster when he really isn't, just seems really dumb.
