Also, in response to some of the other comments, I use a "Character of Color" tag on my fics, and I've never received critical feedback from an offended reader. (Not about that, anyway. There was the one reader who was super offended that I made James and Sirius gay. :-P) So I wouldn't worry too much about attracting a more judgmental audience just because of the tag, OP.

Thanks for this advice. It's nice to hear from someone who has had to think about it for their own fics.

To be honest, my initial reaction about the POC tag was "wtf would I ever use that?". It smacks of everyone non-white being this weird, other race mushed up into POC.

Then I read a comment somewhere, a Hispanic person saying they love the POC tag. They use it to search for fics with characters they can relate to, and they wish more writers would use it. So I thought "was I just being selfish? Should I use it now?"

I think I'm going to go with my first reaction and not use it. This fic does deal with issues of race and xenophobia, but not African-American ones which the character is, so it's not really relevant to the main story.
