Help with a burn (might be slightly graphic)

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-08-15 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I know the Internet is not the best place for it, but I'm leaving for the weekend and going to a doctor would be a major pain in the ass.

So,I burnt my finger. I got some molten plastic on it (don't ask, I was trying to fix something - and I did, it's just that now *I* need fixing).

From the looks of it it's at the very least a 2nd, possible 3rd degree - but it's very small. It went white almost instantly, the area around it is redder than usual. I held it under cold water for a long time, then scraped off the now hard plastic. I'm not really in very much pain, but I'm wondering if there's anything more I should do to tend to it?

You might need to go to a hospital, A&E. You likely have burnt it enough to actually damage your nerves, and that's why you don't feel much pain. Infection is a risk too.

Yeah, don't mess around with burns. Go and get it checked out asap.

I'd go to a local clinic to check it tomorrow if it gets worse. I wouldn't go to the hospital for it but one of those corner clinics. An ER visit is going to cost you an arm and a leg. But one of those local clinics will be thousands of dollars cheaper and you will get the same care.

I'm nor American - it won't cost me thousands. Problem is I'm out of the country tomorrow, so I can't go anywhere local.

Then go tonight. Given it's your finger, it should be quicker than if it was your whole hand.

Speaking as someone who has burned the shit out of themselves on hot metal multiple times: you'll probably be okay. There's not much you can do for burns that bad. Keep it clean, mostly. If it went thick and white right away it probably won't blister (or at least mine never have). It'll callous and then peel off, and, if you're lucky, you'll be fine underneath. I thought I was going to loss my fingerprint on my thumb the first time I did it (the entire pad went white and painless), but it's good as new now.

I've had burns before, but never thing kind particularly. Eh, I'll see how it look in the morning. It'll probably scar, but hey I have a collection.

a burn that's on the lower-mid end of being a 2nd degree burn that isn't too large would probably be fine with home treatment but if you suspect that it really is a 3rd degree burn then you should seek medical treatment immediately because you don't want to fuck around with that.

It's sort of hard to say on such a small area, though. It just looks white.

Honestly, I'm not really sure but I found some info here:

I'd definitely keep an eye on it.

Just a couple months ago I burnt my pinky finger on my hair curler. I don't think you have much to worry about. Just cover it up with a bandaid, I think it should be fine.

How deep is it? Do you have antibiotic cream? Clean it, use the cream, cover it, and leave it alone. Check back in the morning. Is it really red, oozing pus, or otherwise looking 'bad'? Go see a doctor. If not - just keep it clean and dry, let it 'breathe' as often as possible, antibiotic cream and bandage at night/if you go out.

I dripped burning plastic on a finger once -same thing, just a small spot and the skin went hard and white. I think with temperatures like that and the way the small patch of tissue is completely dead it might even account as a 4th degree burn. I just pulled the dead tissue off and put some antiseptic cream and a bandage on it would I wouldn't recommend it- hurts like hell and even though nothing happened to me, the risk of infections is big.
But the dead tissue might have to come off, so I'd really suggest going to see a doctor. Hospital might be an option as well.
