If it's specifically relevant to the fic - MC faces racism or discrimination or something - then it might be useful. Otherwise there's not much point, and it can seem like scrounging for brownie points.

I think that's more or less my stance. I've written one fic that I tagged with 'canon trans character,' but that was mostly because one chapter was centered significantly about her gender identity and how she was slowly moving towards accepting it. If I'd just had her as a background character, or if she'd been a major character but the storyline had nothing to do with her gender at all, I'd probably have left out the tag.

I do seem to significantly undertag things compared to a lot of other people, though, and I wonder if it's not one of the reasons I get so few hits. Ah, well.
