(I frequently do this myself with the canonical gen tag plus the freeform "women being awesome" tag. I just browse the intersection of those two tags and click on any interesting-looking story in a familiar-to-me fandom.)
Or they might want to discover what currently popular fandoms are producing a lot of fic about, e.g., the characters of color, as part of the process of finding new canon to try. (I have a friend who does this; she prefers to only watch TV shows, movies, etc. that already have active fic fandoms, and she also has a strong preference for fandoms with characters of color in significant roles, so browsing AO3 is one of her methods for finding new media to check out.)
