He's 'obviously ugly'? Wtf??? Beauty is not a fixed set of standards. There's nothing 'obviously ugly' about him. Yeah, he's probably not what you'd call conventionally attractive but that's a whole world away from being 'obviously ugly'.

Oh man, so agreed. I feel like that's the case with most people who get called ugly, and it's way too harsh a word for me to feel comfortable using it anyway.

Thank you. Glad this was the first comment. It makes me sad that people are still treating beauty and ugliness like some kind of universal set of standards and taking it for granted that everyone else will think the same way. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-08-18 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think he's unattractive too. Yuck.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, sexy isn't just "classical good looks" after all.

I have no idea how old you are, but yes, it can be jarring the first time you find yourself attracted to someone for non-shallow reasons.

I think reasonable, mature people* already know that attraction is complex, OP. People often disagree about standards of beauty, and even the definition of conventional beauty is highly flexible over time. You like what you like-- be at peace with that, and content yourself with the knowledge that doesn't come to most people until later in life (if at all) that finding someone attractive has a LOT more to do with total package than just how they look.

* and there's no reason whatsoever to listen to the nonsense that unreasonable, immature people espouse.

I am an Internet Old Lady who grew up watching Classic Who, and thus the Fourth Doctor was one of my first fictional-character crushes. Conventional beauty standards aside, I can't not think of him as attractive. Even at like 200 or however old he is now, LOL.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't he considered the "Sexy Doctor" back in his day? He was the youngest up until that point.

Don't waste time being ashamed of who you're attracted to, anon.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
As a young teen, many years ago, I had many sexy-time dreams featuring the 4th Doctor. 30 odd years later I still think he's dead sexy. Attraction can't be explained.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I know my perception is probably colored since the 4th Doctor was my first Doctor, but I also know that I always find people with interesting features much sexier than what I am "supposed to find" sexy.

I think for me, it's the curly hair, and those googly eyes are fascinating. He's positively adorkable!

Ugly? Ugly?

[personal profile] philippos42 2014-08-16 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't even like Four, and I don't think he's ugly so much as distinctive-looking. And I guess he had a pretty sexy voice if you liked that kind of thing.

You like who you like, and frankly he's not ugly.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
To me he looks like Harpo Marx (which is a plus). And Tom Baker has a VERY sexy voice.

I totally get it.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-17 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
You'd be surprised how many fans crush on Four. Far more than you realize anon.

Dude, what? He was the longest-running Doctor for a reason, and he may not be pretty but he definitely is not ugly. I have a crush on Four too and it is wonderful. Just enjoy it OP. <3

(Anonymous) 2014-08-17 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
idk, he's not classically handsome, but at worst I'd say he's maybe a bit on the plain or homely side, not ugly.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-17 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Even if you think he's ugly, the charisma just got you!

What's shameful, he's adorable?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-17 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Who says you can only be attracted to people who match a standard issue Hot Guy template? I mean, hell with George Clooney. I have never found George Clooney attractive. He's not ugly, but he's not sexy nor particularly handsome, not to my eye. And it never occurred to me to feel ashamed because I don't want to bone George Clooney.

Tom Baker's Doctor, on the other hand, can take me for a roll in the ancient Egyptian hay any day.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-17 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
I've had a crush on Tom Baker for years! I loved him immediately as a Doctor, but it took a while for me to start thinking he was hot--he's the type that grows on you, I think. I kind of love those crushes that grow on you. I certainly never would have called him ugly even when I first started watching him! He has such charming mannerisms and a great voice.

He was the greatest crush of my life. I was sixteen. I imagine the crush when you're sixteen remains unparalleled, so, I expect him to stay the greatest crush of my life.

Don't feel bad, OP. I used to like Tim Roth and Fred Ward.
