Hydra aren't Nazis.

Well they aren't ACTUAL Nazis since they're not affiliated with the Third Reich, but it's an organization created by the Nazis so I can't really see how that's not going to enormously taint everyone involved.

My feeling is that they're separated from the Nazis, not just in terms of the fact that they're different organizations in practical terms, but in terms of what they do as a storytelling organization. I don't think they have any real political content, they're pretty much just Evil Badguy Superhero Group, because that's how Marvel has seen them and wrote them and used them.

Just my opinion though, I guess.

I guess…

But being an offshoot of Nazis has MUCH worse implications than just being a generic evil group. Being part of a generic evil group makes it easier to redeem them given the plasticity of their motivations.

But Nazis are basically the scum of the Earth -- horrid ideology, horrid actions, horrid place in history. It's not even like Communism where you can at least argue that *theoretically* it could work without corrupt leaders. Nazi ideology is basically rotten to the core.

Believe me, I'm completely on board with the Nazis Were The Fucking Worst policy position. I'm not trying to downplay what they did or were at all.

I'm just saying, they haven't been written as a Nazi group in any really meaningful sense. They've been written as a generic evil group. I don't think, for practical purposes, they're related to the Nazis. So it's hard for me to see them in the same light as the Nazis, and certainly difficult to straightforwardly equate them.

IA. There's nothing generic about Hydra. They are supposed to represent the essence of Nazism, that it exists in the human spirit and cannot be killed (hence strike off one head and another grows in its place motto). The point is it has existed as an organization all along since the Nazis were defeated, ~through~ Hydra.

Not all Nazis!

Yes, Ward is a Nazi. It's called out in the show. That doesn't mean he can't have a redemption arc. It's not rehabilitating all of Hydra, it's trying to save him.

That said, in a pure common-sense administration sense, he should not be on the team. May is well-established as not much believing in forgiveness, and consistency would imply that to put him on the team would basically mean having her kill him.

He shouldn't be on the team because that kind of emotional tension would make it impossible to do anything effectively anyway. And even if he's redeemed, May (and literally everyone else too because he betrayed ALL of them personally on some level) shouldn't be expected to ever have to put up with him again.

I'd like to see Ward become the big bad, now that insane mentor's shackels have been thrown off, have him come to an epiphany... he served a nutjob and he lost because of that... BUT HE COULD DO BETTER. And then have him actually do better.

I could go for that.

I honestly don't know that he's interesting or independent enough to be The Big Bad.

DA
I will say they made some awesome cars though. I still see original Volkswagen bugs up and running, even now.
