The problem is twofold.
Second, anime fans. Often the (visible) anime fans are the most broken people at a convention or in a fandom space. You know, the people using japanese words for no reason. Obviously most anime fans aren't like this but JESUS the people who are push a lot of folks away.

Your typical sci fi fan isn't going to run into a bunch of gibbering One Direction cosplayers. Their college isn't going to have a stinky unwashed Boyband Club.
