Re: Popular fandoms whose hype you don't understand

Not trying to start a fight, but I honestly don't understand this. There are hundreds upon hundreds of anime titles, with variety spanning every single genre in the book. To say you don't like "anime" is like saying you don't like "TV" or "music".

Agreed. Kind of rolled my eyes at the wankbait there. Anime isn't even really a genre, more like a medium, so what exactly are we supposed to discuss when you say you don't understand the hype?

Honestly not trying to start a fight either, but there is just not a single thing I find appealing about it. I have found every single anime series I've watched childish and immature - BUT I am very, very ready to concede that, just because I cannot find anything in them to enjoy as an adult, doesn't mean that there isn't a way to enjoy them as an adult. It's just not for me.

What did you try? Also not trying to start anything, but a lot of the more popular stuff tends to shy that way.

Oh my word.. Um, I cannot remember the titles to half of them, I'm afraid! My friend has been trying to persuade me to watch anime and showing me a load of different series on and off over the last ten years.

The ones I can remember include Gundam Wing, Death Note, a film about an actress who goes mad and then gets raped (I think it had 'Blue' in the title), and one about baking bread...? There were others too, but tbh they all tend to bleed into one another.

It's not just the plots I find off-putting, it's the style too.

*It's not just the plots I find off-putting, it's the style too. Maybe it's the fact that it's animated? I've gone off Western animation too in recent years.

...okay, Jesus Christ, no wonder. Gundam Wing, though it's full of teenage nostalgia for me, isn't precisely... good. Same for Death Note, you aren't going to like it unless you really like this sort of thing.

Can I suggest something by Satoshi Kon? I'm not suggesting his work because it's anime, exactly. It's just that he's a good, legitimate director and I'd hate for someone to miss his work just because it's cartoons. It's un-anime.

AYRT

Satoshi Kon? Okay, I'll give him a try. I'm always open to suggestions.

Anon already mentioned Kon, they referenced Perfect Blue-- with a wording that makes me think they were trolling or just weren't paying attention.

But yeah, Kon was pretty much a life-action director who didn't want to deal with actors or shitty special effects so he took the sensible option.

Anon

It was the very first anime I ever saw, and was shown it with no intro other than 'this is a good film'. That she went mad and was then raped was really the most standout details for me. It was not a great intro.

Yeah, dude: watch Tokyo Godfathers or Millennium Actress. No rapey weirdness.

Adding to this, Masaaki Yuasa is another anime director who focused on the experimental aspects of animation. Tatami Galaxy is my to go to rec of his, but his most recent series Ping Pong is worth a shot.

Seconding Satoshi Kon, but from the sound of it you've already seen Perfect Blue. His Tokyo Godfathers is very far removed from it, if you're feeling like try something else of his.

And Mamoru Hosoda's stuff avoids a lot of unfavorable things about anime. I like his Wolf Children most.

But if you're just done with anime and would rather bother with stuff you know you'll like, that's fine too.

Thank you for the recs. I will probably keep trying anime periodically. So many people like it, I really feel like I'm missing something.

The problem is twofold.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2014-08-16 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
First, Moeshit

Second, anime fans. Often the (visible) anime fans are the most broken people at a convention or in a fandom space. You know, the people using japanese words for no reason. Obviously most anime fans aren't like this but JESUS the people who are push a lot of folks away.

But I mean, the same thing applies. The existence of mindless pop and creepy bandom doesn't make music on the whole bad. It's just too broad a cloth.

Yeah, but unless you follow specific tumblrs the creepy bandom people aren't in the same fandom spaces.

Your typical sci fi fan isn't going to run into a bunch of gibbering One Direction cosplayers. Their college isn't going to have a stinky unwashed Boyband Club.
