I'm going to say Buffy is one of those "you should've been there" type of things based on when it aired, who it was directed to, and the age of those watching it.

I've re-watched the series a few years ago and I don't get it either. I'm driven by nostalgia. My SO who never saw it before latched onto a few elements, but found most of it boring too.
