I'm going to say Buffy is one of those "you should've been there" type of things based on when it aired, who it was directed to, and the age of those watching it.

I've re-watched the series a few years ago and I don't get it either. I'm driven by nostalgia. My SO who never saw it before latched onto a few elements, but found most of it boring too.

Of course, I have this problem where I hate Joss Whedon's dialogue for being full of quips from every character. It pulls me out of the potential good of most of his shows.

Also, I think the show is very, very dated when watching it now.
