Popular fandoms whose hype you don't understand

...while taking a step back and understanding that taste is subjective and that some good things just may not personally be interesting to you. How about the popular things you legitimately think are bad or mediocre, and you have difficulty actually understanding why people enjoy it?

Not trying to start a fight, but I honestly don't understand this. There are hundreds upon hundreds of anime titles, with variety spanning every single genre in the book. To say you don't like "anime" is like saying you don't like "TV" or "music".

If it's animation style you like, you sure that's not a clear cut issue of taste, and not "it's so terrible I really don't get how other human beings watch this and enjoy it"? I mean, anime is a pretty big category and the thread topic is trying to exclude things that are simply matters of taste. Unless you really think every single anime is ridiculously stupid and you don't understand the interest at all, I guess.

I strongly recommend Michiko to Hatchin and Monster.

Most recently, Kill La Kill. I had heard it recommended numerous times and touted as something brilliant. I watched the first episode and honestly thought I had gotten the wrong anime. It was probably among the stupidest animes I had ever seen. There wasn't a single redeemable feature in it. Maybe you had to "keep watching" but even the premise was so dumb, I just couldn't bother.

Re: Popular fandoms whose hype you don't understand

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The first episode put me off the show too. I tend to not like first episodes, though, so maybe I should keep watching, but I kinda doubt the obnoxiousness of it will lessen. There was not a single moment that wasn't filled with dialogue, like everyone had to comment on everything or plainly state their thoughts, and it had an epileptic feeling to it that I couldn't stand.

This was my exact reaction to watching Kill la Kill, I didn't even make it all the way through the first episode. I'll usually give an anime two episodes before I decide to drop it, but I disliked this so actively I didn't bother.

i think i stuck with this anime mostly because of what a trainwreck it seemed like it was going to be--plus it was refreshing to watch something that was a self-aware stupid parody of itself and completely not taking anything seriously. somewhere along the way i actually got invested in the characters (???) and ended up with a ton of friendship feelings near the end.

i don't know if i would call it "brilliant" but i think it's enjoyable if you come in with really low expectations, lol

I like Marvel movies, but honestly, I don't think most of them that great. I finally got around to watching Captain America a few days ago, and there was nothing about it that was particularly memorable or that stayed with me after the movie finished. It pretty much seemed like a bundle of cliches and borderline boring storytelling. There were some fun moments, I agree (loved the dancing/singing routine) but I don't get the fangirling over it. Felt the same way about Iron Man, honestly. I saw that one a year ago and can't remember anything about the plot.

(and I grew up reading comics/watching the superhero cartoons so yeah, it's not like I'm just outside of this genre)

Honestly, at this point I'm just watching them because I have this thing with continuity. If I liked something when I first started watching/reading it, then I feel like I need to finish it. Even if it turns into a horrible mess. There are a few dealbreakers where I'll nope my way out, but not many.

I liked the first Iron Man movie and thought RDJ was a great casting choice. So, I stuck it out for the sequel which I didn't like. But then they started doing their MCU thing. I didn't care for both the Thor or Cap movies. But I enjoyed The Avengers. Now I'm just stuck on this ride even though I'm still wondering how I even got on it. And just when I think I'm going to get off, they throw Thanos in my face.

Supernatural. I watched because a friend of mine is a huge fan and she thought I'd like it too, and now after having finally gotten through the whole thing, I honestly can't figure out what everyone's so worked up about. The writing is so bland and repetitive, and personally I found the characters either flat as pancakes (Cas) or genuinely unlikeable (Sam and Dean).

Bonus: I honestly didn't see Destiel at all? I keep thinking I must have missed some key episodes or something, but I didn't.

Based on two episodes, Teen Wolf? Like, I guess shirtless teenage guys (which I'm way too old for) might be some of the hype, and I may or may not have went in hoping for lots of gay subtext or something and was disappointed how bland even the het was. But it seemed pretty cliche and actually bored me. Maybe it gets better. it probably gets better. can't see what the draw is, though.

Seiyuu, and to a lesser extent, actors in general. I can't understand being such a big fan of somebody's voice that you'd watch something just to hear it. I'm more of a visual person so I can understand it more with actors, because you get to see and hear them, but sitting through something for no other reason than to see an actor you like is still kind of a weird concept for me.

The Fifth Element.

I happened across this movie while flipping channels once and seriously thought it was a parody of the sci-fi genre because it was so bad and the costumes and effects were so awful. Later I found out that apparently everyone but me thinks it's awesome. I'm just... completely lost.

Can Winter Soldier be considered a fandom all on its own? Or is that too narrow?

I barely got through the movie, so tumblr exploding over it was something that made me went "whut."

I don't get it, I never will. I don't understand how a person looks at the rows and rows of churned out books and see any depths worth plumbing.

Also, anime. I just never will understand the draw or attraction.

Celebrities. Why do people obsess so much about the personal lives of people they're never going to meet? They're not any more interesting than your average Joe or Jane, when it comes down to it.

Clickables.

I tried dragcave and don't really get it. It's kinda like evolving Pokémon, but you whore yourself out for clicks and views instead of just exp grinding. And there really wasn't any goal it felt like.
