To me, the whole point of fanfiction is an exploration of the possibilities inherent in canon and the different stories that can be told branching off from a given work. And there's no reason why those stories should specifically be romantic ones. There's all kinds of interesting stories that are contained in most works. There's all kinds of relationships, all kinds of tones, all kinds of plots. Some of them are romantic, some aren't. That's just kinda the way stories work.
