Why do people like gen fic

(Anonymous) 2014-08-18 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Like, what's the point? I'm serious, I don't get it. IRL, the only people who think romance isn't the most important part of life are people who can't get a date and have sour grapes. So what's different in fandom? Romance actualizes a person, so why don't you want to actualize your characters?

Why are all the trolls out today? It's MONDAY. And why are you trolling when you can obviously write in a pretty mature way and are obviously just doing this to see if people will yell at you?

I like fanfic because I like to explore different possibilities of what could have happened in canon. Sometimes this applies to relationships. Sometimes this applies to other aspects of canon, like the politics or what can be done with the magic.

And uhhh I dunno about your logic there. I hardly think romance is the MOST important part of life and I assure you I am not dateless :\ Actually the more I read your post the less I understand but there's my answer.

" the only people who think romance isn't the most important part of life are people who can't get a date and have sour grapes"

Or people who are... you know...asexual or something.

Romance isn't all there is. That's a fact. Hell I've got a boyfriend and I've been in love /crushed at least...3 times now and even I get this. There is more to life than just romance.

Romantic relationships aren't the only way to develop your characters or "actualize" them. Just about any character testing conflict can do that. Your character can be tested by having to choose between their best friends and their family for example. Romance isn't the ONLY way to do this.

There's nothing wrong with people writing about something other than romance every now and then. Also, some people just don't care about romance. It's not that they are sour about it, it's that they're not interested.

You look pretty damn stupid stating such childish things ("you're only sour about it because you're bitter nah-nah") as fact and something "everyone knows".

Now I'm like:

I'm going to pretend I believe that you're not trolling.

First of all, as an aromantic-asexual, I'd like to remind you that we exist. Some of us have no idea how romance works, let alone consider it emotionally important.

Second, the "romance actualizes a person" statement makes no sense. Wtf is this "actualization"? People aren't cracked Photoshop copies, they do not become more functional after an activation key has been pasted in the appropriate field.

Re: Why do people like gen fic

(Anonymous) 2014-08-18 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the point is to focus on non-romantic relationships, which I think can be just as strong as romantic ones. It's just a different kind of strong. So no, it's not just about people with a chip on their shoulder.

Having said that, I prefer a balance between gen and romance. People tend to have many kinds of loves in their lives, so why can't a story or fanfic reflect that? Why does fandom so often want it to be one or the other?

Re: Why do people like gen fic

(Anonymous) 2014-08-18 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Because sometimes I get burnt out reading shippy fic. And I love reading about friendships.

Are you insane?

Seriously, the only fic you want to read is smut? How did you ever get into the fandom in the first place?

Actually, it's funny, in my own art, I started out thinking, yeah, I can do porn and sell it. And over time the sex just got to be less and less. My characters are pretty much always clothed now, and I don't even care.

"Flash, I love you, but we only have fourteen hours to save the Earth!"

I mean, I know you're trolling, but honestly. Priorities? At any one time in a person's life there can be a hundred things more important than romance, even leaving aside questions of asexuality. Depending on who they are or where they live, everything from surviving a warzone to putting food on the table to building a career to becoming healthy again to raising children ...

Wow. Troll. Obvious troll. But wow.

Re: Why do people like gen fic

To me, the whole point of fanfiction is an exploration of the possibilities inherent in canon and the different stories that can be told branching off from a given work. And there's no reason why those stories should specifically be romantic ones. There's all kinds of interesting stories that are contained in most works. There's all kinds of relationships, all kinds of tones, all kinds of plots. Some of them are romantic, some aren't. That's just kinda the way stories work.

Gen fic is the methadone we self medicate with when the creators of our favorite shows stop pumping out the real heroin.

Bigger question is why do you need to ship?

Because ship fic sucks balls and the only people who like it are teenyboppers writing wish-fulfillment tripe. IRL, the only people who think that romance is the be-all-end-all are 16-year-old starry-eyed fangirls who want to bang their favorite characters. (She said, replying in the same vein as the "question.")*

*Disclaimer: I do not believe nor endorse the above view.

Serious answer: Some of us are old married people who don't think that reading about people looking for love in all the stupid places is all that much fun.

1. Because if I watch a TV show or movie, and want more of it, I want more of what I have already seen, not something that disregards the universe completely in favour of some predictable soap opera plot.

2. Point 1. goes double, triple, quadruple, for procedural-type shows/movies. I am watching the show/movie FOR THE PROCEDURAL why do I want to read about two main characters who hate each others' guts in-universe seXX0ring it up? I don't.

Romance actualizes a person, so why don't you want to actualize your characters?

You must have a sad, unfulfilling, one-note life, OP. I could not disagree with you more, and I blame fanfic and Internet fandom, and its soap opera-like mentality, for even convincing you of such a horrible thing as your above statement, in the first place.

I'm going out on a limb and assuming you're not a troll. But only because I met someone recently who thinks like you - he was a professional man, about sixtyish, who was utterly devastated because he was going through a divorce and that, in his eyes, made him a failure. Because he thought that the One True Purpose of life was to be in a monogamous heterosexual relationship, and if he couldn't do that he wasn't a Real Man or even fully human. Talking to him was an eye-opener, because I've never met someone before who put ALL his attention into one tiny facet of human experience. The man was incapable, at first, of realizing that compassion or platonic love or familial love were - LOVE. Because his definition of love was so unnecessarily narrow.

Now, to you, O Naive Kid - Yes, romance actualizes a person. So does travel, or losing your job, or having a baby, or working for something you've always wanted, or finding your faith, or... et cetera. You're thinking too narrowly. Also, what about those who don't have the time/interest/opportunity to date? Is it "sour grapes" to think raising your kids is more important than going on a booty call?

I can't decide if you're

a) a bitter insecure only-gen fan looking for validation via reverse-psychology

b) a snobby smug shipper who can't stand that other people think your preferences aren't the be-all end-all and are just blowing off steam because you have already decided that everyone who replies to this disagreeing with you is a dateless loser, or

c) someone who broke her leg and is stuck in bed and is really, really, really, really, really, really bored.

But if you think that romance is the most important part of life, you are sorely mistaken.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-08-19 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Why do people think romance and romantic relationships are so important? Why is it a default assumption that one's romantic partner must be the center of your universe?

I seemed to upset a friend of mine when I said I don't care much about romance and don't really need or even want much in my life. She seemed worried for my boyfriend because he was obviously no where near the center of my universe, as have some other people. My boyfriend, meanwhile, says he's grateful he's not at the center of my universe (and I feel the same way towards him) - neither of us would really like that kind of pressure.

I know that a lot of this is just due to the media representation of romance and what not, but still - why have so many people fallen so hard for this particular media misrepresentation? It seems like such an obvious constriction on one's life and soul, why is it so prevalent? o.O
