Re: What do you think of the ALS Ice Bucket challenge?

[personal profile] honk 2014-08-19 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
my little brother had als which is unheard of in kids his age but it was really messed up regardless. he and i were real close and his absence has pretty much ruined my life and the way in which he left us was completely fucked. als sucks. in older people they just linger and wither away but their mental faculties are all intact throughout unless theres somethin else wrong w them

like can you imagine slowly getting weaker until you cant move and every breath and heartbeat is a struggle and youre conscious/aware for the whole thing? thats fucking agonising to even think about. i guess i should be glad it took my brother sooner rather than later but he was 8 and dying at 8 years old is unfair and fucked up in its own right, & imagining dealing with that as a child and then being aware of it all is really awful to think about

the als association needs the attention and the funds. any degenerative illnesses suck, really any illnesses in general suck obviously but being awake and sane throughout a terminal illness is truly one of the worst things i can imagine going through. any attention als gets can bring the world one step closer to finding a much-needed cure and ridding itself of one more awful thing

plus the ice bucket challenge isnt really dangerous so idc if its trendy or w/e its not hurting anybody unless ur real fuckin dumb and waterboard urself somehow

I know it might not mean much, but I'm sorry this happened to you and your family.

And this right here is why I don't care that it's 'stupid' or being 'wasteful' to throw ice water over your head. As long as awareness of this horrific disease is growing and money is pouring in (last check: $22.4 million), that will go towards effective treatments/cure, that's all that matters in the end.
