As long as all the celebrities that are doing the ice part are also donating, I'm for it.

I don't even care if they donate. I mean, I am sure they are all donating at least the $100. But just exposure they have given the ALS Association is awesome.

Awesome! Glad they have raised so much money (and that they continue to do so).

Also, it gives us hot celebs covered in ice cold water. MMmm. Yes.

One Chris down. Two more to go.

Also, YAY! Raising money!

RDJ challenged Hemsworth when he did his Ice Bucket Challenge, so it should be soon.

This is what, exactly? Another one of those Darwin Award things spread by social media?

"The Ice Bucket Challenge, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on one's head or donating to the ALS Association in the United States. It went viral throughout social media during the summer of 2014.

The challenge dares nominated participants to have a bucket of ice water poured on their head. One common stipulation gives 24 hours from the time they are nominated to complete the dare; otherwise, the participant is asked to donate money to charity."

Many celebrities have been doing it. They then challenge someone else to do it as well (ex: Tom Hiddleston challenged Luke Evans and Cumberbatch. Nathan Fillion challenged Tom Hiddleston, not sure who Bill Gates challenged.)

They have raised 15.6 million dollars so far as opposed to 1.8 million raised all of last year.

A couple friends on my facebook have done it. :)

I know at least one person whose life is affected by ALS who is very happy that people are acknowledging it and contributing to research.

I don't like awareness stunts for things that people are already aware of because I feel like there are better things the time and energy could be spent on, but this isn't one of the things that everyone is already thinking of.

Plus donations are up miles away from where they were during the same time period last year ($15 million thus far and counting). Hopefully all the money coming in will help go towards getting at least some effective treatments for ALS, if not a cure.

I thought it was stupid until I learned how much money it had raised. Now, I think it's fantastic.

It's for a good cause that a lot of times doesn't get a whole lot of attention towards it. Plus who doesn't like to see people willingly torture themselves by putting buckets of cold ice water over their heads?

Re: What do you think of the ALS Ice Bucket challenge?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-19 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
If people are doing it to raise awareness, and they're also donating money, I'm fine with it. If it's another cool thing to do that "oh right has some sort of purpose," then I have a problem.

Also, I saw a comment somewhere saying people hadn't even heard of ALS until this started. Is it just me, or does that seem really unlikely? Sure, ALS may not be covered as much as other diseases, but I think the basics of what it is, at least, is fairly common knowledge.

^ SA - I'm not sure how well I stated the first part, so let me rephrase: I applaud the people who are doing this for the right reasons, and not just social media attention.

idk, I think it's possible to have not heard of ALS (though I think at least some of those people have heard of Lou Gherig's disease and aren't aware it's the same thing) since I rarely hear about it

i know a lot of ppl who are clueless, its a rare disease and even if someone hears about a famous person like stephen hawking or lou gehrig being sick they probably forget the name of the disease real easily

I think it's fucking annoying and has taken over all of my social media.

I think a lot of people doing it won't even give a shit about ALS in a couple of weeks but I'm glad it's raised so much money

See, I don't care. Hell, I don't even care if someone donates money to a charity just for brownie points. It is still money helping someone.

my little brother had als which is unheard of in kids his age but it was really messed up regardless. he and i were real close and his absence has pretty much ruined my life and the way in which he left us was completely fucked. als sucks. in older people they just linger and wither away but their mental faculties are all intact throughout unless theres somethin else wrong w them

like can you imagine slowly getting weaker until you cant move and every breath and heartbeat is a struggle and youre conscious/aware for the whole thing? thats fucking agonising to even think about. i guess i should be glad it took my brother sooner rather than later but he was 8 and dying at 8 years old is unfair and fucked up in its own right, & imagining dealing with that as a child and then being aware of it all is really awful to think about

the als association needs the attention and the funds. any degenerative illnesses suck, really any illnesses in general suck obviously but being awake and sane throughout a terminal illness is truly one of the worst things i can imagine going through. any attention als gets can bring the world one step closer to finding a much-needed cure and ridding itself of one more awful thing

plus the ice bucket challenge isnt really dangerous so idc if its trendy or w/e its not hurting anybody unless ur real fuckin dumb and waterboard urself somehow

Re: What do you think of the ALS Ice Bucket challenge?

And this right here is why I don't care that it's 'stupid' or being 'wasteful' to throw ice water over your head. As long as awareness of this horrific disease is growing and money is pouring in (last check: $22.4 million), that will go towards effective treatments/cure, that's all that matters in the end.

As a marketing student I find it insanely interesting just how successful the whole campaign has been. I've been taking notes on how to do SM marketing right. Also seeing that it's achieved its goal of raising awareness and donations is remarkable.

What's most intriguing is how willing celebrities are to contribute if it's 1) for a good cause 2) requires very little work to do the call to action (bucket, ice, water, go!) and 3) publicly challenge their friends to do it too. I think the challenging is what's really getting them into it. Almost like a digital water fight. It's great!
