(Anonymous) 2014-08-19 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)When someone says, "It's almost difficult to interpret his character any other way", what they mean is, "My interpretation/head canon is the rightest and I'm pressuring you to fall in line with me."

(Anonymous) 2014-08-19 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)This. I don't want to step on the warm and fuzzy "everyone's interpretation is right for them!" approach, but... yeah, some interpretations are miles off. If I interpret Guardians of the Galaxy as a religious allegory outlining my political takeover of the American Cattle Rancher Association, there's a very good chance I've missed the point.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-19 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)Good to know! (I suspected as such but, since I hadn't read the source material, I didn't feel comfortable commenting on that aspect of the secret.)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-19 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)To give an off-the-wall example, let's say that someone interpreted Luke Skywalker as representing eugenics-based Nazism. I'm not sure that telling someone they were off the mark on that one would be out of line.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 04:14 am (UTC)(link)I suspect that in order to say such a thing one must have read the source material, which I have not.
But, to be pedantic, your point doesn't disprove my point. In fact, it supports it: there's always another way to interpret a character. I never applied an intrinsic right/wrong value to that statement.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)Ah, see, the impression I got was that you were saying that all interpretations are valid, and that it's therefore wrong to criticize an interpretation.
