BOY HAVE I

Like forget all the one-episode characters in Star Trek that were supposed to be one-episode characters. Because I ship a lot of those.

But Cretak?

others include Geordi and his Romulan boyfriend, Geordi and Hugh, Picard and Nuria, Troy and Toreth, Beverly and that Trill, Jadzia and her ex wife and don't even get me started on Quark (I made a secret about that once)

She should have been a main character. Watch her in the first two episodes of DS9 season 7. You can tell she's supposed to be a main character.

And then they never used her. Brought her back in one episode where they changed the actress and then sent her off to prison to make Julian Bashir look cool (protip he's been a dork for 7 years just keep him as a dork)

CONSPIRACY THEORY TIME: I'm 9 million percent sure it was because Megan Cole and Nana Visitor had ridiculous chemistry and any sexual tension was completely deliberate on Cole's part. Not that crazy considering how they jumped through hoops trying to make Bashir and Garak seem not gay. But I don't have any proof and I don't actually care that much, I just want more fic to exist.

these are all completely out of order

Others include: Geordi and his Romulan boyfriend, Geordi and Hugh, Picard and Nuria, Troy and Toreth, Beverly and that Trill, Jadzia and her ex-wife and probably others I'm forgetting.

I'm not sure it's entirely due to them having chemistry. I think at least part of them is just not knowing what to do with the character.

Like, I like the character herself, and their chemistry was cool, but the actual subplot concerning her in the episodes was kind of dull for me (although that might have been less so had her character stuck around so it seemed less like a hallucinatory thing). And I'm not sure where else they would have gone with her character.

On the politics side of things, I'm not sure how many storylines they could have fit in around the Romulan politics end - they only got one in there and it wasn't that strong (or that Romulan). And on the personal level, Kira was already in a relationship with Odo. And while I think that's a terrible dumb relationship, it's difficult to see us getting a lot of Cretak * Kira scenes when the writers already had a character they wanted to play her off of.

I don't discount the possibility that the chemistry might have had something to do with it. But I think a lot of it is just the difficulty of writing a big show with tons of moving parts when you only have one season left.

The thing about them having chemistry is mostly a joke. Like maybe it has a grain of truth in it. But I'm mostly kidding.

And I dunno. I think they could have done interesting stuff with her if they really wanted to. They chose to go in a different direction. I thought they were gonna go into Bajor-Romulus political relations and end up making stuff happen with Romulus and the Federation. Maybe someone wrote a tie-in novel about it but I have trouble getting into those.

But yeah, season 7 is pretty late in the game to be introducing another new character, on top of Ezri. Maybe I shouldn't have said main. Maybe I should have said recurring minor character.

Yeah my vision of what happened is that they went into season 7 thinking they were going to do a ton of shit with the Romulans (who had, after all, only entered the war in the middle of the season before) and then somewhere early in the season they realized that wasn't going to be possible and chucked everything out.

Also from TNG: Bruce Maddox and Phillipa Louvois. What? Shut up, they ended up on the same space station together, it could have happened! So what if she was Picard's former plus one, and he wanted to disassemble Data? They were perfect for each other!

Also! Sakkath (Sarek's aide) and (Dr.) Selar, from "Sarek." Additionally, the Romulan spy who was posing as a Vulcan ambassador, and Selar's 2IC, who extracted her, from the same story arc.

...I may have overthought these things just slightly...

Wait do you mean this Selar? Is there another Selar? Because if you mean this one I fucking love Selar.

I'm gonna add that I also ship Kirk and the Romulan not!Sarek Commander in Balance of Terror.

That's the one! Yeah, I'm more predictable, it's Romulan Commander/Spock, for me. The Rihannsu Pocket Books may or may not have gone a loooong way towards fuelling that....

Er, I just reread your comment (very late here) and completely missed that you meant Mark Lenard's Romulan Commander. *facepalm*

Do you mean the lady commander?

I haven't actually watched that episode yet but I am in love with her.
