Obscure one-shot ships

(Anonymous) 2014-08-19 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever had the experience of really enthusiastically shipping One Of The Main Characters/Love Interest Of The Week Who Shows Up In A Handful of (Or Just One) Episodes And Then Disappears, in a show that aired ten years ago?

If you have, feel free to talk about them here!

Oh hell yes. Somewhat frequently.

My favorite is from X-Files, with Mulder and the blind girl in Mind's Eye played by Lili Taylor. I just really like their chemistry, and I think the girl is fascinatingly hardcore in a way that I really enjoy and that really plays well off Mulder.

See, my secret X-F ship back in the day was CSM and Mulder's mom. Yeeeeeeaaaah I kept it REALLY quiet, for obvious reasons.

Heh. I've had thoughts like that between a main character and a character who WASN'T a love interest but only showed up in a handful of episodes on a show that started nearly 20 years ago.

Guess I should say what: Daniel/Kawalsky from Stargate. Seriously. WATCH THEIR SCENES. You'd think if I was going to ship Kawalsky with anybody, it'd be Jack, but noooooo.

OP

Do tell! That is great too, I should've included non-canon ships in my original comment :)

Yep! Anyone remember the anime-only pirate character Shura from Rurouni Kenshin? Even after all these years, I still ship her with Kenshin so hard. They were a perfect match imo

I need to see that episode. RIGHT NOW.

Oh boy, do I ever (though most of the fandoms are way older than ten years)! Here's the first four that came to mind:

Duncan MacLeod/Brian Cullen (Highlander)
Frank Grayson/Luke Macahan (How The West Was Won)
Geronimo/Cochise (Cyborg 009)
Ken Hidaka/Akira Hibana (Weiß Kreuz)

Ooops, just saw that you specified "love interests" in your original post -- and, uh, none of these actually were...

I really liked Starsky/Joan Meredith. I mean, when I do ship him (which is only about 1/3rd of the time), I usually ship him with Hutch, but if I needed to ship him with someone else, it would be with her.

All Hutch's girlfriends were terrible matches for him because the poor man has literally the worst taste. The actual worst. Worse than Xander's.

Like forget all the one-episode characters in Star Trek that were supposed to be one-episode characters. Because I ship a lot of those.

But Cretak?

others include Geordi and his Romulan boyfriend, Geordi and Hugh, Picard and Nuria, Troy and Toreth, Beverly and that Trill, Jadzia and her ex wife and don't even get me started on Quark (I made a secret about that once)

She should have been a main character. Watch her in the first two episodes of DS9 season 7. You can tell she's supposed to be a main character.

And then they never used her. Brought her back in one episode where they changed the actress and then sent her off to prison to make Julian Bashir look cool (protip he's been a dork for 7 years just keep him as a dork)

CONSPIRACY THEORY TIME: I'm 9 million percent sure it was because Megan Cole and Nana Visitor had ridiculous chemistry and any sexual tension was completely deliberate on Cole's part. Not that crazy considering how they jumped through hoops trying to make Bashir and Garak seem not gay. But I don't have any proof and I don't actually care that much, I just want more fic to exist.

these are all completely out of order

Others include: Geordi and his Romulan boyfriend, Geordi and Hugh, Picard and Nuria, Troy and Toreth, Beverly and that Trill, Jadzia and her ex-wife and probably others I'm forgetting.

Re: BOY HAVE I

I'm not sure it's entirely due to them having chemistry. I think at least part of them is just not knowing what to do with the character.

Like, I like the character herself, and their chemistry was cool, but the actual subplot concerning her in the episodes was kind of dull for me (although that might have been less so had her character stuck around so it seemed less like a hallucinatory thing). And I'm not sure where else they would have gone with her character.

On the politics side of things, I'm not sure how many storylines they could have fit in around the Romulan politics end - they only got one in there and it wasn't that strong (or that Romulan). And on the personal level, Kira was already in a relationship with Odo. And while I think that's a terrible dumb relationship, it's difficult to see us getting a lot of Cretak * Kira scenes when the writers already had a character they wanted to play her off of.

I don't discount the possibility that the chemistry might have had something to do with it. But I think a lot of it is just the difficulty of writing a big show with tons of moving parts when you only have one season left.

Okay, sorry, actually being serious now: Riker/Commander Shelly. BOOM.

When I was a little kid watching Pokemon, I shipped Brock with a girl of the episode, Suzy the Pokemon breeder.

A few years later: I find a fic I wrote about them and say, "Oh, silly little me for shipping a random one-shot character with the guy who fell in love with every girl he met."

A few years later yet: I watch old Pokemon episodes for the nostalgia and nope, I still ship it. Because unlike most girls of the episode, he was attracted to her for her skills and personal values instead of primarily her looks, and she actually liked him back.

The only person I ever really shipped Dean with (...besides Sam) was Layla. IDK why but none of his other love interests did it for me. Layla was cool though (and pretty, and sweet) and I wish she had been around for more than one episode.

One old at all, but One Piece aired a special anime episode in preparation for the second film, where a character named Lily was introduced. I loved her design and she was as boisterous and gluttonous as Luffy, and they genuinely got along very well, so they had potential. The episode's plot sucked, but she was a fun character that I wish had showed up in a better episode.

Yes. Not only is the ship rather obscure, the show itself isn't that well known, I think.

Thief Takers was a UK show from the 90s about the Flying Squad. There was an ep where one of the cops, Bob "Bingo" Tate (played by Brendan Coyle, yes, Mr Bates) is trying to get the driver of a robbery crew to grass on his crew. The driver, Paul Valera, is gay (and honestly for the quality of TT, he's actually quite well written). And I'd argue Paul is the love interest of the week, cus Bob goes undercover to meet him, etc. Pretty much the same as he would for a woman, though Bob'd probably actually have slept with a woman. The two men manipulate one another through most of the ep...but by the end, they seem to care at least a little for each other. There was a small group of us on Britslash who loved this ship, so I wasn't alone...and there are a few fics out there.

I still love this ship though.

LOL
Back when I was actively into Saiyuki (still love it, just don't do the fandom thing), it seemed like everybody and their mother had a problem with Goku's little romantic entanglement with the village girl (Mei something maybe) but I thought it was fantastic. I really thought it showed that he was growing up and becoming less dependent on Sanzo, which was great.

Speaking of Star Trek, er, Be'lanna and Vorik, for that one episode, Blood Fever. I dunno, just something about a seemingly emotionless being breaking down into nothing but emotion and instinct because of something beyond his control. And I liked that they were almost a match in physical strength, and when she totally put him down on the floor for touching her.

Mostly for the way he attacked Tom and declared that Be'lanna was his mate. I don't usually like anything that calls an SO 'mate' but it worked for me that one time.

Alicia Baker from Smallville. I guess I get that she had to be shuffled off so Lois could be introduced, but man, as horrible as she was in her first appearance, I shipped rehabilitated Alicia with Clark something fierce, and I was not happy they killed her off.

Niles Crane / Guy, the Very Gay French Ski Instructor from that one episode.

I like to think that when everybody else went to bed, Niles thought, "You know what? Why the hell not, actually?" and then Guy gently instructed him in the ways of man on man action - and that the real reason Niles spent for bloody ever figuring things out with his second wife and then Daphne was that he was trying to figure out if he and Guy could be a real thing or not and whether or not to move to France....

Yeah, I remember after I saw that episode for the first time I looked online and was horrified to find ZERO FIC. I was so SURE it'd be a thing. Then again, that's what I get for arriving mega-late to the party of a fandom that seems to have very close to no fic anyway. :/
