esteefee: Tony in tank top with arc reactor standing in front of a larger arc reactor. (avengers)

[personal profile] esteefee 2014-08-20 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
He's brilliant. He created the world's first artificial intelligence (which we're still trying to do in reality) and it sasses back at him and that's how Tony likes it.

He also works with his hands: he built the first Iron Man suit and arc reactor in a cave using a forge and repurposed missile parts. He built a home assault kit, including flash bangs and hand taser, in an afternoon using a shopping cart of supplies from Lowe's. He fixed the hellicarrier's rotor on the fly, thus saving it from plunging into the ocean.

He built a freaking particle accelerator in his workshop. And made a new element with it.

So add engineer to that list.

Unlike many origin stories, which tend to make the heroes all vanilla and pure (sorry, Cap) his origin isn't blameless. He seriously fucked up by not paying attention and playing the hedonist while someone else took advantage of his carelessness. His wake up call was a shrapnel bomb in the face and soldiers (just kids, really) dying to protect him -- dying with his own weapons. He paid for it, and he's always paying for it in his head. So you could say some of us are fascinated by his guilt complex.

So, that's part of my answer. Also, see this vid by lim.
