Nothing against you, OP, but I feel like I'm the only person who dislikes Tony Stark.

What is it that people like about him?

To me, he just seems like such an escapist character that it's boring as hell.

He's a billionaire!

He's a handsome playboy!

He's a philanthropist!

He's a genius!

He was abused and/or neglected as a kid (OMG TRAGIC BACKSTORY)!

He pretends he doesn't care but he actually DOES (Jerk with a heart of gold)!

I just find him utterly inane. He just seems so…artificial to me -- like he's a character designed to pander.

No offense to anyone who likes him, but he just rubs me the wrong way.

I like him mainly because it makes it completely open who he is.

Sorry, but that's a bit ridiculous. You could describe just about any fictional character in the universe this boringly. It's all a matter of whether you personally see something interesting there. If you don't, totally fine. But also, if you don't, it doesn't mean other people are delusional and hallucinating. NEWSFLASH: DIFFERENT PEOPLE FIND DIFFERENT THINGS INTERESTING.

I don't mind if people like him -- I just wish someone would explain the appeal to me. Especially because it seems like I'm in the vast minority -- most people seem to adore him (again, nothing wrong with that I just don't get it). Heck, I even said "nothing against you, OP" and "no offense to anyone who likes him."

I didn't say anyone who likes him is delusional or hallucinating. Nor do I see how anything I wrote could imply that.

I said that *I* found him inane and boring.

Characters' appeal is rarely something that can be consciously "explained." If you want to change your opinion of him, go snoop on the Tony Stark fanfic and meta of a big fan of his (a non-annoying fan, that is) and try to see him through their eyes. That's what always works for me whenever I find a character uninteresting.

But why would you bother? If you don't like a character, why should you try to bend over backwards to like him when you don't have to. You could just as easily dislike Tony Stark but, say, love Black Widow in the movies and still get something out of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Because the "I don't like the character" person that's actually being responded to is actively asking for? Except they're asking for it to be done for them. If they really don't care they're still not going to care when someone goes through the trouble. If they do, they can look at the suggested things.

I find him way too annoying most of the time so you are not alone.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-19 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Well don't you worry, just get into the current New Avengers, Avengers and the upcoming Superior Iron Man to see Stark be truly a huge dick.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-19 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like him either, so we can bask in solidarity together, anon. I was indifferent to him until the MCU (I stopped reading comics a couple years back but barely read Avengers even then). Now it has become full-blown hate. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-08-20 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I thought he was incredibly annoying in the Iron Man movies but I liked him in The Avengers movie. Like, I hatehate hate hate Iron Man though.

You're not the only one who feels this way. It's like they crammed a bunch of character traits together and came up with him. He bores the fuck out of me.

He's brilliant. He created the world's first artificial intelligence (which we're still trying to do in reality) and it sasses back at him and that's how Tony likes it.

He also works with his hands: he built the first Iron Man suit and arc reactor in a cave using a forge and repurposed missile parts. He built a home assault kit, including flash bangs and hand taser, in an afternoon using a shopping cart of supplies from Lowe's. He fixed the hellicarrier's rotor on the fly, thus saving it from plunging into the ocean.

He built a freaking particle accelerator in his workshop. And made a new element with it.

So add engineer to that list.

Unlike many origin stories, which tend to make the heroes all vanilla and pure (sorry, Cap) his origin isn't blameless. He seriously fucked up by not paying attention and playing the hedonist while someone else took advantage of his carelessness. His wake up call was a shrapnel bomb in the face and soldiers (just kids, really) dying to protect him -- dying with his own weapons. He paid for it, and he's always paying for it in his head. So you could say some of us are fascinated by his guilt complex.

So, that's part of my answer. Also, see this vid by lim.
