Hi there, alien from another planet! Here on earth, sufficiently attractive male characters can do just about anything and fans will defend them.

I think this criticism is actually pretty unfair - sure, male fictional characters can get away with a lot if they are hot and charming and fangirls love them. But women actually often aren't taken as seriously. Women being abusive is often seen as funny, cute, or non-threatening both in real life and media, and I think that's OP's point. I actually do wonder how many people watch this show and thought Morello was creepy but the whole thing was a little bit funny, whereas if Morello had been a male character it would've caused more discomfort. I don't know, and I can't say, but real life does suggest that women aren't taken as seriously.

I'm actually starting to loathe the whole "if person were opposite sex things would totally be different!!!" argument, personally. i find it kind of derailing. if the woobifying of morello uncalled for? definitely. is it because she's a woman? no.

how is it derailing, it's a real life phenomenon directly concerning what we're talking about.

I mean, it can be absurd to claim a certain character wouldn't have fans if they were the opposite gender or something. But does the general public find a woman committing abuse less "abusive" than a man? I would argue yes, overall.

Agreed. I'm thinking of Tiger Woods' wife, who went after him with his golf clubs after finding out he cheated, and I think hit him in the face as well as smashing his car?

Many many people laughed and made jokes about that, including myself. But I felt bad for laughing, after I stopped to think, would I have found this as funny if Tiger had bashed his wife in the head with his golf clubs? No.

Nowadays, I often flip the gender around when considering an issue to consider if it would change the way I'd perceive it. I can't see how it's a bad thing to ask those questions.

ayrt

That's what I think, too. For example, how is a woman slapping a guy acceptable, when the alternative is so shocking? There are gender double standards, especially when it's women committing violence instead of men.

If Morello were a man she would be an entirely different character anyway - given that she's specifically obsessed with stereotypical ideas of love and marriage especially.
