I dunno, you have a sweet, big-eyed dumb kid who's really nice to everyone for a season and a half, there may not have been as harsh a reaction to the stalking as you'd think.

But then again I think Morello should be in a psych ward, not prison, so what do I know.

I don't know. Male characters get forgiven for a lot.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yo this. If Loki can gets hundreds of fans trying to justify his genocide, a male character stalking someone probably won't get too many negative reactions if he's cute enough.

It was definitely not a problem that Edward Cullen faced among a large amount of people.

That guy from Misfits comes to mind. Kid was a creepy-ass stalker and pervert who strongly considered raping someone, but he was a fandom favorite because, aww, look at those big baby blues.

Yeah... I'm not here for the woobifying of Morello or that "PROTECT LORNA AT ALL COSTS".

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I love Morello as a character but the woobifying is missing the point. Don't even get me started on the "PROTECT MORELLO AT ALL COSTS" Tumblr people.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Speaking of which, what "costs" are these people speaking of when they use that fucking term? IT'S FANDOM. IT'S FICTIONAL. THERE IS NO ONE TO PROTECT AND NOTHING TO PROTECT FROM.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
The costs? All the mental effort expended in writing rebuttals to incorrect opinions! Searching for media polls you can vote in for your character's benefit! Reblogging and reblogging until your fingers hurt!

You don't know how they suffer.

That's the point of her character though - arguably, she did some of the most batshit insane and violent things of any of them, but she's so disarmingly sweet. The idea that such violence can exist in such a character is supposed to be a shock. Of all of them, she's the one that most reminds the viewers that these woman are still criminals, regardless of how humanizing their stories are.

Well, I think liking any character in the show, it's a given that you're going to forgive that they are simultaneously bad people (different levels of bad, granted).

Morello, though, idk. Her flashback scenes made her seem totally delusional, and considering she is that detached from reality involving the guy makes her seem... not forgivable, but as someone else said, like she needs serious therapy and has serious mental issues. That episode, at the very end where she's holding that stuffed animal and and crying, and saying she doesn't want a veil, somehow the show managed to make me feel kind of bad for her. Right after she did some crazy creepy shit.

Hi there, alien from another planet! Here on earth, sufficiently attractive male characters can do just about anything and fans will defend them.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I think this criticism is actually pretty unfair - sure, male fictional characters can get away with a lot if they are hot and charming and fangirls love them. But women actually often aren't taken as seriously. Women being abusive is often seen as funny, cute, or non-threatening both in real life and media, and I think that's OP's point. I actually do wonder how many people watch this show and thought Morello was creepy but the whole thing was a little bit funny, whereas if Morello had been a male character it would've caused more discomfort. I don't know, and I can't say, but real life does suggest that women aren't taken as seriously.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually starting to loathe the whole "if person were opposite sex things would totally be different!!!" argument, personally. i find it kind of derailing. if the woobifying of morello uncalled for? definitely. is it because she's a woman? no.

Ugh, why haven't I finished the second season yet, I keep getting spoiled... (It's my own fault, I know!)

Anyway, that's some batshit stuff... I never put much thought into what she was in prison for, but I never suspected that level of disturbing either. Holy crap.

I've loved her character so far and don't see why you would have to be okay with her actions to be interested in her. I also don't see why you would try to ignore or defend this type of behavior, but honestly...male characters get away with a lot too, and I feel like if a character is 'charming' enough then it doesn't necessarily matter what gender they are, people are going to sympathize with them on some level and/or forgive them. People are complex.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't get why people were all "ohh, poor Lorna"

I found out and I was really horrified and disgusted over the engagement/planning for her wedding that I'd believed. I mean, I was all for her relationship and thought her wedding planning was an interesting aspect - planning a wedding in prison? I bet that's super difficult - and then to learn the truth

and she snuck in his house and took a bubble bath wearing the bride's veil the level of oh my god ick was too much for me, I had to look away

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I think some people project onto her and make her into a victim of unrequited love. No, guys, that's missing the point.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
No we don't. We feel sorry and bad for her because she's so messed up in her head. She's broken, crushed and delusional. No one think she's a victim. Not to love anyway. She's a victim to her own delusions and that is the sad part.

I love Morello, and I didn't love her any less when the truth came out. She is sick. Sick people need help. Her story just makes it even more painfully obvious that things aren't as they should be. She should be in care, get therapy, instead she's stuck in prison where she has all the time in the world to disappear into her delusional world with no one to help her.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree. But it's easy to sympathize with Lorna over her victims because even when her backstory was the focus, it was from Lorna's point of view. The show kind of even painted Christopher as a jerk for flipping out on her after she broke into his house and presumably destroyed his fiancee's veil.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, you're absolutely right, OP. After learning the extent of her stalking and delusional-ness, I see her in a whole new light. She needs some serious help.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
OP, I absolutely agree with you on this. I find her one of the creepiest characters in the show to be honest. Christopher was definitely in the right for getting angry at what she did; for all he knew she could have poisoned the food while she stayed in his house. She was willing to kill Christopher and his girlfriend with an explosive before. What would stop her from doing something like that again?

I think one of the best moments is when Morello recognizes how fucked up she really is and tells Nikki that. But this woman is no lamb and deserves to be locked up for her crimes. Christopher owes her nothing and people who portray him as a jerk are being ridiculous.

Fandom loves nothing more than cute fucked up white dudes.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
she would be treated differently but not how you think.

The circumstances of Morello stalking someone are very different than the circumstances of a guy stalking a woman. They made a point to show how Morello was obsessed with her appearance, shitty rom-com movies, and the societal expectation that making a guy fall in love with you Pretty Woman style is what validates you as a woman. Guys stalk women because they feel entitled to them. The same culture produces movies where beautiful women fall in love with mediocre dudes because every woman a dude wants to fuck secretly wants him to fuck her, as long as he can press the right sequence of buttons to activate her underlying consent.

It doesn't excuse what Morello did, but I like that they very carefully showed the kind of fucked-up individual that fucked-up messages in popular culture can produce.

Her stalking is fairly female-specific, so it seems a bit daft to say she would be treated differently if she was a man. The character wouldn't exist in that case. I feel very sorry for her now I know her true story, because she's clearly unwell. She should be getting psychological help.
