Re: What is the sign of someone being rich to you?

well, I mean, the dictionary is pretty straight forward:

"having wealth or great possessions; abundantly supplied with resources, means, or funds; wealthy" -dictionary.com

key words: abundance, great possessions, etc. the economic classes do not go "poverty or rich". I mean, you can't actually think that. Middle class is called middle class for a reason.

Yeah, and? If you've never struggled for money -- and I don't mean "oops, I'm short on cash this month, guess I'll stop going out to eat every other day", I mean chronic "which do I pick, food or medicine?" money issues, you're not going to understand.

Okay? People who haven't lived in poverty aren't going to understand how it feels to live in poverty. I agree.

That doesn't make everyone else rich. That's where your claim gets crazy.

As far as I'm concerned <--- see that? Do you need me to link you to it again so you can re-read it and make sure?

From my perspective, if you don't get it, if you've never had to get it, if you can afford things without sacrificing something else, if you don't feel guilty spending money on yourself, you're fucking rich. That is my opinion. What do you want, a fucking chart? Annotated empirical evidence to back up my opinion? It's my opinion.

Besides, the middle class is disappearing in this country so what's this argument fucking matter anymore anyway?

Now I'm depressed. Thanks a lot.

And "as far as I'm concerned", you're dictionary wrong? Sounds an awful lot like "everyone who isn't me is rich". I mean you can have an opinion, that doesn't make it a correct usage of a word that actually does have a meaning. And I'm not being pedantic here, I think it's fucking stupid that you're claiming everyone who hasn't experienced poverty is rich. And your comments really have zero concession of being a matter of relativity, instead you're getting ridiculously defensive.

And okay, I'm not sure what you want me to say? Middle class is disappearing, nothing matters anymore, etc? things kind of escalated quickly here lol

And whose fault is that?

It's my opinion, it's how I'm calling it, you can "correct" me all you want and it doesn't change a thing. You want to get on me for being "ridiculously defensive" while purpousely putting me on the spot because you think my perspective is wrong? Then I'm not interested in this conversation anymore.

I think what dethtoll is trying to say that to someone living below or around the poverty line, someone being middle or upper middle class sure as hell seems rich. Which I agree with tbh.

Exactly right.

Ayrt

:) don't worry, I get what you mean. I get it all too well.

Someone can be lower middle class and still never have lived at the poverty line where they actually have to skip meals, etc. And okay, I can concede that we could say "seems rich" in the same way five minutes seems like a long time when you really have to pee, but five minutes isn't actually a long time and middle class people still aren't rich.

DA and new to the thread.

Just pointing out the irony of the great and miserable dethtoll calling someone else un-fun. When I'm not in the mood to keep up with your antics I just mentally replace the wording with "I hate this SFM so much and anyone who disagrees can choke on my poop"

I'm not one of the haters or anything, but you let's be honest, you're interactions on FS are generally so dour and hateful make Zero punctuation seem upbeat and all loving.

Ha. It's like you know me.

(you actually don't, and the point I was trying to make was that AIRT was basically being uselessly pedantic to the point where it was impeding discussion, which I suspect may have been the point)

You don't even have to go near the poverty line. My family has skirted pretty close a few times, but generally we bounce up and down middle class.

Not only do people "my" class seem rich to me, people who come from families with incomes less than mine confound me and seem rich to me, even understanding that they don't have seven-digit debt like mine does.

How can you be so casual about going to the doctor's office - don't you know how expensive that is? Why are you doing your grocery shopping at X Store when you can get nearly twice as much food for the same amount of money at Y Store just a few blocks away? Why would you pay for that textbook you know you won't need it often and that your library has? How do you not feel guilty asking your parents to completely pay for something as non-essential as a concert ticket, or a new laptop/phone/tablet when your old one was working fine? I feel bad enough asking them for help with paying for college.

I mean, right now, I'm sitting at a Starbucks and drinking the smallest caramel frappuccino they have...to treat myself because I just got my paycheck and I got a lot done this week (and because I'm trying to wait out the traffic). I don't understand how anyone eats or drinks here on a daily basis, but apparently that is a Thing some people do. o.O

I love how rich-definition anon is abjectly refusing to respond to anyone except me.

I don't blame you - I wonder who they are and why they seem so pissed at you rather than what you and everyone else are actually saying. :P

Oh boohoo. You aren't the only one who ever had to leave the fucking medicine behind in order to get the milk. But just because the person in line behind you CAN afford their cart of food and prescription medicine doesn't make them objectively rich, it just makes them better off than you. If you look around, I'm sure you'll find people even worse off than yourself.

What was the point of this post, other than trying to feel superior to me?

I would imagine (NAYRT) the point is that "Rich" is a fictional divide that adds a ridiculous "Them and Us" conflict where it helps no-one. "I don't have and you do, so fuck you"

Actually, that definition seems to dovetail quite nicely with what dethtoll described. "Abundantly supplied with resources, means, or funds" = has never experienced privation or needed to choose between necessities. "Having great wealth or possessions" = can spend money on spontaneous frivolities without having those luxury purchases affect their survival budget. "Wealthy" = maintains a very comfortable standard of living with reasonable stability.

Maybe you're the one with a skewed understanding of wealth. "Rich" doesn't have to mean, "owns a fleet of yachts and had an artificial lake built to sail them in."
