Betas

How important do you consider a beta to be for fanfiction? Have you ever used a beta? Been a beta? Why/why not?

Best/Worst experiences?

I don't really have a general opinion about the importance of betas because I think that some people manage without them and some people really benefit from them. Personally, I find it helpful to have someone look over my fic before I post it. After a while, it becomes hard for me to see flaws in my own writing because I know how it's supposed to be in my head so it helps to have someone point out things that I've missed or to help me get unstuck in a certain area. I feel the same way about essays for class. A fresh set of eyes always helps me out. I've been a beta to some close fandom friends before and it was a pretty good experience because we felt comfortable enough with each other to give constructive criticism and we were also comfortable enough with each other to not be offended

OP

Yeah, I get that. I tend to use betas to make sure my characterization is well done (something I find harder to do when I feel "too close" to a character). It's definitely helpful to have a second pair of eyes.

For me, my beta is very important. I don't submit everything to her, but when I do, she absolutely makes my fic better. Grammar-wise, because I suck at grammar, and since she knows the characters like I know the characters, she'll tell me if something isn't working. I wouldn't be half the writer I am without her input.

On the 'worse' side of things, there was once this writer who ran a site. She'd basically beta a fic without being asked and give you a list of what was wrong or what she thought wasn't working and where she thought the fic should go, plot wise. She killed at least one writer's desire to continue with her criticism.

I was, but I was in college, and the fic also ended up being longer than I expected, so I never... finished beta reading. :/ I still feel bad about that, especially as I always hated when my betas did it to me.

I've only had a beta once (it was required by the archive I was submitting to, and they assigned her to me) and I was so unimpressed with the results that I've never used one since.

It's not that I think my work is perfect, though I believe I can safely say I have a reasonable grasp of grammar, punctuation, spelling and other technicalities. It's just that I do a fair bit of editing myself before I post something, and looking at that story in retrospect, the beta picked out a bunch of stuff to change in terms of sentence structure that I still don't see a problem with, while ignoring some things I'd probably change if I were writing it now.
