I've only had a beta once (it was required by the archive I was submitting to, and they assigned her to me) and I was so unimpressed with the results that I've never used one since.

It's not that I think my work is perfect, though I believe I can safely say I have a reasonable grasp of grammar, punctuation, spelling and other technicalities. It's just that I do a fair bit of editing myself before I post something, and looking at that story in retrospect, the beta picked out a bunch of stuff to change in terms of sentence structure that I still don't see a problem with, while ignoring some things I'd probably change if I were writing it now.
