I hate how people make assumptions about you as a person because they disagree with your opinion.

I also hate how everything "problematic" is framed in terms of white fans. Which is, ironically, discriminatory towards fans of color because there are a lot of us who do like these so-called "problematic" characters or "problematic" ships and it'd be nice if they didn't erase our existence in their self-righteous quest for affirmation.

In that vein, I hate that people assume you cannot be friends with someone even if you agree on major things.

okay, sure, probably won´t be friends with a neo-nazi, but there are gradations here.

Wait…am I misreading?

People assume you CANNOT be friends with someone even if you agree on major things?

Why would agreeing mean that you can't be friends?

Or are you annoyed that some people insist that minor disagreements should prevent friendship?

In which case I agree.

Some people think you cannot be friends if you disagree on major things (sorry that was a brainfart), like say an atheist being friends with a person who is practicing a religion, or a pro-life-person with a pro-choice person etc.

Okay thanks! That makes more sense.

Still agree with you by the way.

Two of the my favorite people were like this.

One was a liberal gay socialist Jamaican man. He was great friends with a conservative Christian white cis heterosexual ex-Marine man. Who was also a Republican.

Exactly, it happens.

I agree with this. And two people can have the exact same political/religious/etc. views, it doesn't mean that they'll necessarily like each other. Two of my roommates had the same opinions on a lot of issues but they had a big falling out anyway because personalities clash. One of them hated the other for a while.

"Why are you attacking me?" when you're only stating that you disagree on something.

Just to clarify, I'm not saying that people aren't allowed to disagree with me.

I just get annoyed how saying you didn't like how a particular scene was handled in terms of a particular character will have people dismissing you as a "white fangirl" who is displaying internalized misogyny and racism.

Both of those things have happened to me and all I could think was that even if I was white, what does that have to do with my POINTS?

Or "You're ruining my enjoyment!" if you dare to say that you don't like a particular character/pairing/plot line. Um, why exactly can't you enjoy something if someone else doesn't?

On the other side, I get peeved when people assume anybody critiquing something for being "problematic" is a white person looking for something to crusade about, because "I'm not white/have a friend who's not white, and I don't/my friend doesn't think it's problematic."

Re: Discussion pet peeves

That's another form of the same issue, in my opinion.

Instead of focusing on what the person is saying, that individual is dismissed because of some factor they can't help (in this case their race).

For me, I just get tired of seeing "you're so-and-so therefore your opinion doesn't matter"!

It's as bad as people who act as though all white people do one thing and all POC do another. Nope - life doesn't work that way.

It's BS. If you have a problem with a person's critique then address that -- not their race/gender identity/sexuality/sex/etc.

Anytime I see someone responding to an argument with "You sound white" I know that it's just going to get worse from there.

Re: Discussion pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would anyone even say that?

I mean…I know that racism isn't something you can express towards white people, but you can still be prejudiced towards them.

And saying "You sound X" is like waving a big red flag saying you're a prejudicial asshole.

Because anyone who disagrees with you must be one of the social group you're criticizing. THEY MUST BE.

Obviously people in positions of privilege can have very sheltered world views and I don't agree with them dismissing legitimate issues as just whining, but that doesn't mean that, say, white people can't have a reasonable differing opinion. And if the person who disagreed with you isn't white that just makes things awkward. I just wish that people could remember that belonging to the same social group does not mean you're a hivemind.
