Discussion pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Whether in a fandom context or not. What are some things people say that drive you nuts?

For me, it's things like "lol I haven't even cared about that in years." Then... why even jump in?

Re: Discussion pet peeves

- When people say they're really into the things I am, but as soon as I try to engage them in a conversation that goes beyond the bare basics, they have no idea what I'm talking about. It's not necessarily those people's faults, their idea of loving something and mine is clearly different (mine tends to mean I've read/watched it a million times and know the most mundane details, other people's seem to be they can name two characters apart from the main character), but it makes for awkward and frustrating situations.

- People who can't tell you're getting off the phone. I have a friend I won't even talk to on the phone anymore because I could say "oh shit, gotta go, my house is burning down" and she'd keep on talking the night away.

This. Both of these.

Re: Discussion pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
The second one, so much. And not even just phone calls: My parents have a friend who talks and talks without ever stopping. I usually avoid her, but one day, I ran into her when she was visiting. I tried keeping the conversation at a minimum, but she kept talking at me. And then I very clearly said "I have to go now. Goodbye" - several times even. And she looked like she had acknowledged it, so I went downstairs. And when I had reached the bottom of the stairs, I heard that she was apparently still talking at me, fully expecting me to still listen to her.
And she keeps doing that. It's so weird.

OMG I hate it when people can't get off the phone. It's why I hardly ever talk on the phone these days. Or part of the reason, at least. It's such a timesink, and if you've already told the person you need to wrap it up, rude!

I hate how people make assumptions about you as a person because they disagree with your opinion.

I also hate how everything "problematic" is framed in terms of white fans. Which is, ironically, discriminatory towards fans of color because there are a lot of us who do like these so-called "problematic" characters or "problematic" ships and it'd be nice if they didn't erase our existence in their self-righteous quest for affirmation.

In that vein, I hate that people assume you cannot be friends with someone even if you agree on major things.

okay, sure, probably won´t be friends with a neo-nazi, but there are gradations here.

"Why are you attacking me?" when you're only stating that you disagree on something.

On the other side, I get peeved when people assume anybody critiquing something for being "problematic" is a white person looking for something to crusade about, because "I'm not white/have a friend who's not white, and I don't/my friend doesn't think it's problematic."

I know this is terrible but: pensioners who don´t really have anything concrete to do who still go out in rush hour or visit supermarkets at the busiest hours. Yes, obviously you are a free peerson and can do whatever the fuck you want, but whyyyyy.

Re: Discussion pet peeves

I think I know what you mean. My town is popular for vacations and such. During morning and afternoon rush, when working stiffs like me are trying to either get to work or get home so we can get dinner going, I normally have to swerve either my shopping cart or my car to avoid retirees strolling or racing bikes on roads that barely have enough room for a single line of cars.

Selfish as it is, and self-involved, I wished they would wait a bit to go out, and stay in at 5 to 6 o' clock at night.

I think the idea is that they have nobody left to see so they go out at the busiest hours to get a feel of people?

I always just go with it and say,

"I should be given how much I fap to it."

99% of the time it's not even true. Still fun to watch their reactions to TMI.

Although I am aware of how creepy it makes me sound but…eh...

Got this from a so-called friend regarding fandom at a point in my life when everything around me fell apart, depression was drowning me, other coping mechanisms had failed and that investment in fandom was the only thing that barely kept me afloat.
(Couple of years latter, things are better, depression is kept at bay, am still involved in fandom, and we're no longer friends.)

If anyone compares anyone else to a hooved mammal (whether sheep or goats), it's a bad sign for the direction of the conversation. At best it turns into me blandly pretending to agree with them so as not to pick a fight.

Re: Discussion pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
A general pet peeve I have is people who graze when they're selecting items from a buffet. It drives me crazy to see people pop something in their mouth while they're filling their plates. I know it's an extreme reaction but I always think that person doesn't have the self control to wait until they go back to their table.

I also really hate seeing noodles hanging off a piled on plate at Chinese buffets. Food should not HANG off of anyone's plate.

I don't go to buffets very often anymore.

If anyone even suggests going to a buffet I instantly lose some respect for them. Unless they are like.. old, because old people really like buffets.

People who constantly pick arguments and then get defensive and hurt and try to back out as soon as they're losing. Either suck it up and stop being so sensitive, or stop pushing the buttons of everyone you talk to.
