Agency.

"Violence" is getting close.

I swear I once saw someone refer to an ad reminding people to drink water and not soda was an "act of violence" against fat people.

Now I believe in not being shitty to people for their weight and stuff, and that shaming someone (actual shaming) is not going to get them to change their habits). But....reminding/advising people to drink more water? HOW IN THE HELL IS THAT VIOLENCE?

It isn't violence. But as someone recovering from an eating disorder and really severe BDD, a lot of seemingly innocuous friendly reminders to "eat healthy" or "drink X, not Y" were detrimental to me. I wouldn't call them violence, but they had the same effect on my disordered brain as outright shaming a lot of the time, and they were one of the things I had to actively avoid (and still do to some extent) in order to stay healthy. So I can definitely understand why someone would react badly to something like that.

I also think a lot of Friendly Health Reminders could be worded a lot better; I don't know if this particular one is an example.

Ahhh.

I guess i can get that. Though if it makes it feel maybe a little better, "drink more water and lest soft drinks" isn't just a weight loss thing. I was taught that in one of my study classes in college, because drinking too much soft drinks and not enough water actually causes dehydration which can have a negative effect on anyone. When I was working at Walmart I had some really bad days because I had too much soda or coffee and had horrible headaches all shift.

Oh, it's totally true! Drinking water is great and exercise is also great, whether you want to lose weight or not. But I do see both things getting promoted explicitly as part of "anti-obesity" campaigns instead of as things that are good for everyone. That makes life a little harder for people like me, and probably many others as well. I think that's something health campaigners should take into consideration.

There's a big difference to me between "Soda causes dehydration; drink more water to feel better throughout the day!" and "Drinking water instead of soda helps prevent obesity!" One sounds like good general advice that isn't singling anyone out, and the other, no matter how nice you try to say it, is always going to sound to me like, "Your body is defective; get it out of my face. Also, now that you know how to stop being defective, there's no excuse."

I don't mean this as an argument, just a partial explanation. I'm already pro-water. I just also feel like I get where your angry soda friend is coming from.

Ahh...Okay I seee.

I apologize then.

No worries! It's really easy to not see how something could be hurtful if it doesn't affect you personally. And water really is great! Thanks for being nice about it. :)

You're welcome! I was just really confused.
