I think reading anything in a second language, you give it the benefit of the doubt, so it just seems better.

The few times I've tried to read fanfic, smutty or not, in other than my native language (English native, read in Dutch) it's been quite fun, even though I don't think the fics were that good. The mind fills in the gaps and improves it. It's the same reason that horror movies should never show the monster. Expectation is always more powerful than reality.

Not sure about that. I read books when my English wasn't as good and felt very meh about them, but rereading after a few years made me appreciate them a lot more.
It probably depends on what you're looking for - if it's the plot and the big ideas, you may enjoy it more if you don't have less-than-great writing in the details distracting you. I'm more into subtle character developements and the prose itself, so I kept missing a lot of the things I would have loved when I didn't have as much of a feel for the language.
