Re: Words that have lost meaning to you?
Anyway, a bit off topic, but I have three problems with 'trigger' warnings:
1. No matter how hard a writer tries, he or she is never going to identify and list every possible 'trigger' (because what one person finds 'triggering' another person finds totally innocuous), but listing some 'triggers' sort of implies that the story is otherwise 'safe'.
2. Some writers use warnings to warn, but others use warnings to advertise features of their stories, which leads to the offensive business of warning, for example, for slash.
3. A warning is also a spoiler. If a writer has crafted a plot full of drama and suspense, a warning can give the twist away. I have seen people imply that the writer's feelings don't count (...why some people are too narcissistic to care for other people and their feelings and to take consideration of them I will never understand...), but if writers didn't put in a huge amount of effort (for free) there wouldn't be any fanfic for anyone to enjoy. Do writers really not deserve as much consideration as readers?
Re: Words that have lost meaning to you?
(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)I actually have been taken to task because I posted a story to a site that requires listing warnings by choosing from a list, and one of the things I chose doesn't happen until the very end of the story. Which people got miffed at, because they thought it would be a main theme.
I usually "Choose Not to Warn" for the very reasons you listed. I understand actual, honest-to-goodness triggers. I have a few, myself. But that doesn't mean I'm going to pass up potentially good movies/shows/books/fanfic because there's no warning label.
