Yeah, same.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't blame you, OP. I wish I could say the same thing but in my experience, I feel I could never actually experience the Sailor Moon fandom one way into another without hearing some batshit story about someone...

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-08-24 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I've always been on the edge/"fringe" of SM fandom ever since I was a kid (in that I never got involved with discussion or fanworks with others), but I've heard some rather... interesting stories about certain people/groups that make me raise an eyebrow. But from my experience, it's not the most batshit fandom out there -especially as far as an anime one goes-, but I'm sure there's much more lurking under the surface if I wanted to look hard enough.

That said, I've kind of been underwhelmed by SMC thus far (it looks nice most of the time, though), but maybe it'll be better in a binge watch-y way once the season/series is completely done and in the can.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mean the story about that manipulative cosplayer who thought she was actually Usagi? I remember that one from the good ol' days...

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-08-24 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That, and the entire, twisted odyssey between Miss Dream (a fansub group) and some guy who was clearly not right in the head (I think this guy also had a fansub group, but also stole fan fic and fan art from people and refused to take it down from his site). I observed that going down a few years back from the sidelines -via Fandom Wank, mostly- and it was ugly. Don't know if there's any write-up of it anywhere... might be something still on LiveJournal, I dunno.

But the manipulative cosplayer mess? That I think takes the cake as far as batshit zaniness in Salior Moon fandom goes.

original anon (not op)

there's still remnants of the thread on sailor moon fansubs forums (i can pm you if you want), not to mention nangbaby is still around. :\

also, i've dealt with a couple moonies that are... not....all there, if you catch my drift. they're good people otherwise but just some people that i feel that i would take on their problems, when i'm already dealing with a lot of shit as it is.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Same, especially considering the really extreme merchandise peddling and the incredibly disappointing quality of the actual art. I was ready to jump through hoops to defend it, before I kind of sat back and was like...why? It is disappointing. And I don't have to hold on to it out of nothing but nostalgia.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I actually left a few fangroups because I couldn't take how vicious they were in their defense of SMC, calling people "spoiled jealous brats who couldn't understand REAL talent".

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
same here. a lot of my ""friends"" (that basically got dumped) always liked to shit on the art because they knew it's a hot button for me (i can't help but defend it because a lot of the complaints are dumb as fuck) and i used to defend it and then episode 3 came out...

also, i'm a bitter bitch that a lot of the really awesome merchandise is japan only.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
You could always use a proxy service to buy some of that merch.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
SA

true, but i don't always have the means for it. :\ plus, i'm always extremely wary when using proxy services or any kind of agents; especially in regards to their commission fees - not to say that they don't deserve a lil something for their hard work but... it adds up, you know?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true and I can understand that. It's why I've never used why myself. I want to, but so many to choose from and the fees can be killer.

Have you tried Amazon Japan? They used to ship overseas from what I've eard.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
right right!

hmm, i haven't considered! but i'll see what i can do, especially since i'm limited to google translate. or we can look on ami-ami.com! sometimes they sell exclusives from there. :D

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
AmiAmi is pretty good. Amazon Japan can be browsed in English. Here you go. http://www.amazon.co.jp/In-English/b?ie=UTF8&node=1094656

Good luck, anon.

Recommended shopping deputies

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
As a collector I've used English-speaking shopping deputies situated in Japan for both fandom and non-fandom things since like 2003 or 2004, for hundreds of parcels. Clothes, accessories, toys, collectibles, cheap handmade jewelry, school supplies, etc. ^^

From experience I recommend shoppingmalljapan.com and fromjapan.co.jp, they have thousands of customers, same with rinkya.com (my first deputy) and noppin.com. If you want to do your own research and decide for yourself, just Google "Japan auction shopping deputy" and you'll see more hits that you can count. ^^

Through deputies you can bid on Yahoo!Japan auctions and order from Japanese online shops. :) There's lots of good deals and sales and used items that are basically as new but cost like 30-50% of the original price, and it isn't difficult to find items that cost less with deputy fees and shipping on top, compared to eBay's inflated prices and greedy sellers!

It cracks me up when something for $50 + $25 EMS shipping worldwide on eBay is listed at 1000 JPY on Y!J. I see it all the time and feel sorry for those who only use eBay. The same sellers get their stuff on Y!J for dirt cheap and re-sell it to inexperienced/desperate buyers on eBay. It sucks. They even have the nerve to call items "SUPER RARE!" when there's a handful of them getting relisted on Y!J week after week with no bids.

DA

Thanks for the info! SMJ is one of the ones I've looked into. Have you had any problems with them?

I used From Japan recently and had no issues with them! My only addition would be that the new merch releases tend to be iffy with how well it goes for deputy orders because Premium Bandai sometimes places a 5-item limit per individual, and most deputy sites will count as "individuals." I've had to ask friends to place orders for those cases.

It's almost always for the make-up, too.

I've never been in the Sailor Moon fandom and I enjoy it on my own. The way SMC has people so divided gives me zero desire to delve into the fandom because I know it will not be pretty. I'll just continue watching it and hope that the show keeps some modicum of consistency in the animation.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I've never delved into the SM fandom, nor do I care to.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I used to be a big fan in the nineties (when I was exactly the same age as the Sailor Scouts), but hearing about the new reboot has left me mostly cold.

It makes me kinda sad watching all the new fans getting all excited and seeing all the merch and fanart, and here I am, remembering how I used to be the same but unable to feel it anymore. :(

(It's weird because it's the only fandom I've ever outgrown.)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Has anybody noticed that TVTropes is going out of their way to minimize discussion about the artwork and instead making it about "OMG how great it is that it's back!"

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, I've noticed it too.

It is actually nice to see the new take on it, I've noticed several similarities as well as several differences and I'm okay with it. I think the big thing is that I just need not to compare it; luckily it's something I've learned in fandom. Comparison is the death of anything.
