How early are we talking? I was in the Harry Potter fandom (... although we were insane) back in the early-mid 2000s and JKR got a LOT of hate. That said, it seemed to be the exception rather than the rule, the way it is these days. :/

The most vocal were the Harmonian contingent, accusing her of not writing her characters 'right' as in Harry and Hermione were clearly soulmates and all that nonsense.
