How early are we talking? I was in the Harry Potter fandom (... although we were insane) back in the early-mid 2000s and JKR got a LOT of hate. That said, it seemed to be the exception rather than the rule, the way it is these days. :/

What was she getting hate about from the fandom?

I'd rather they just bash creators online than do stupid "campaigns" in the real world.

I pretty much the stupid excuses they use to hate a character too. Like with Ward and Jane Foster OH LORD you just wanna laugh.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean Ward from Agents of SHIELD? Because I'm pretty sure most of the reasons a person would have to dislike Ward are pretty legit. Unless there's some sort of stupid going on I haven't witnessed.

I think the same amount of underlying resentment over creative decisions was always there. The difference is the internet gives it a public forum, and people end up in echo chambers which whips the resentment up into seething hatred and outrage.

So... I guess I actually agree with you, OP, even though I'm usually averse to saying things were better in the old days. Most things are better without hatred-filled echo chambers.

Honestly, I would have agreed with you completely…until I became a Star Trek fan.

Seeing what JJ Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, Bob Orci, and Damon Lindelof have done to it makes me so damn sad that impotently raging about them is just one way I can comfort myself. Pathetic? Yeah. But does it really matter? They hold all the cards at this point.

But the fact that Orci is writing the third one with two newbies (AND fucking directing it too apparently) just sends me into spirals of grief. Relatively speaking, mind you, but it freaking kills me to see what they've done to Trek. It really does.

I don't think we hate on the producers more than we used to. The folks in charge of the Star Trek franchise got a lot of hate in the 90's. It's just more obvious because we have tumblr, twitter, and facebook as direct avenues for assholes to send messages directly to them and, if we're lucky, death threats. :(

Aha. Ahahahahahaa! No. Sorry, Arthur Conan Doyle got hate mail for killing off Holmes. Russian Czars and nobles would demand sequels to stories that didn't end to their satisfaction. Sorry, m'dear, but you're thinking of the Good Old Days of Never.

I really hate when people use the argument "Don't you have anything better to do with your life?"

I mean, I don't know how long it takes you to do things.
But I know it takes me all of like five minutes to write up a complaint about something.
Five minutes, irregularly, out of a 24-hour day.

I would hardly consider that wasting one's life. That doesn't even count as a real fragment of one's life. Not by a long shot.

As for the subject of the secret, I don't really give a shit. People have opinions.
It only really starts crossing the line when they start stalking or harassing the creators, or actually interfering with the way they live their lives.
If you put something out there, not everyone's going to like what you do.
And they're not entitled to.

I long for the halcyon days where it was only "I don't like this so the creators suck"

Today it's "I don't like this and I'm totally justified in not liking it because prombl-o-matictm! whitehetmalesciscum who made it obviously hates women, poc, gays, trans, etc."

OH! and since you have now got me rolling on this, does anyone else remember when "Queerbaiting" was just called fanservice?

It's interesting when you support the direction the creators are going and people are complaining about it, it's all about "fan entitlement." When you don't support the direction the creators are going and other people are supporting it, it's "fan pandering". (Yes, I'm thinking of a specific fandom right now.)

I think people have the right to express their opinions about things. I don't support stuff like sending hate directly to the writers and/or actors, or harassing other fans, but stating your opinions in your own space or in public forums is part of what fandom is about, isn't it?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing I've found though is often people will complain about people hating on some show/book or the creator if they still like the thing and suggest that the 'haters' go away and find something else to watch etc., but when they find themselves in a similar position of hating what a creator is doing to a show they love or whatever it is that's caused them to feel disenchanted suddenly it's no longer 'hating', but about the right to express their feelings.

Honey, creator bashing has been around forever.
Does no one remmeber in 1996, after Evangelion ended, all the disappointed fans went batshit and vandalized Gonzo studios and sent death threats to the director?
This isn't a new thing.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do I have a feeling you think 'hate' is criticizing the show or book or whatever in any way shape or form?

My stance on this is that I only get upset 'if' the creator/author in question does not support alternative fanworks. I have nothing against canon; great if it goes my way.. but if I am not a big fan of pairings, I will write my own fic and RP my own alternative. It is not my place to call the author wrong, it is after all their creative license and people can just deal or gtfo.

I've been in the Dr Who fandom since 1963, when I was 6 years old; I was in a Dr Who society at uni, where we met to discuss every episode...

One difference I've noticed between then and now is that then, we would simply accept an episode as a valid story, and discuss its features and whether we thought they worked or not; now, the prevailing approach seems to be to begin with the notion of an 'ideal story', which has certain necessary features, and then compare the episode to that ideal (and generally find the episode a failure). I presume this reflects recent developments in literary criticism as taught in schools? It does tend to make for reviews that emphasise the negatives.

Don't know what you're smoking, OP because I've been involved with fandom for twenty years and hell yes, fans bashed the writers when they didn't like how the show was going. I think you're waxing poetic about an idyllic time that didn't really exist.

reminds me of the recent fan entitlement bullshit to overcome the dragon age fandom. apparently some folks were so miffed that varric wont be a love interest that they were sending some of the writers some really nasty, hateful messages.

like sorry but the writers dont really owe any of us anything, and the fandom shouldnt be seen as some collective suggestion box - or worse, writers for the game themselves. if everything turned out the exact way you expect, then whats even the point?

I'll take it over creator worship. You must be blind if you think people don't do that just as much either.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you completely, OP. I've watched some of my old HP friends start acting completely crazy after they joined TW or other newer fandoms. You'd think the creators were out there killing babies or something the way people hate on them.
