Aha. Ahahahahahaa! No. Sorry, Arthur Conan Doyle got hate mail for killing off Holmes. Russian Czars and nobles would demand sequels to stories that didn't end to their satisfaction. Sorry, m'dear, but you're thinking of the Good Old Days of Never.

Shipping was apparently hugely serious business back then too. Louisa May Alcott, who wrote Little Women, got so much mail about it she even wrote:

"I won't marry Jo to Laurie to please anyone."

I agree that the entitlement and feelings in general have always been there, but I also think the modern platforms for airing and discussing those feelings tend to escalate and validate them.

I don't know - we certainly got pretty escalated in TNG fandom in the '80s and early '90s, and all we had was Usenet!

Agreed, although finding out game news because people sent devs and writers negative messages minutes afterward is still an "interesting" new direction.

It sort of comforts me that humans have always been humans. Even if it frustrates me that it also means an endless cycle of "In the good old days" "Older generations were idiots" and "The next generation is declining!"

I see it a lot in "In The Old Days cosplayers were nice and supportive and held hands and sang kumbaya all con" And I just want to laaaaugh. I mean there's no reason not to dream of less wanky fandoms, but lets not delude ourselves that this is a brand new problem and things need to get back to normal again.
