Honestly, I would have agreed with you completely…until I became a Star Trek fan.

Seeing what JJ Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, Bob Orci, and Damon Lindelof have done to it makes me so damn sad that impotently raging about them is just one way I can comfort myself. Pathetic? Yeah. But does it really matter? They hold all the cards at this point.

But the fact that Orci is writing the third one with two newbies (AND fucking directing it too apparently) just sends me into spirals of grief. Relatively speaking, mind you, but it freaking kills me to see what they've done to Trek. It really does.

See, I'd argue that this is a little different. JJ Abrams and Bob Orci and company didn't create Star Trek. What they did was take creative control and fuck it up really hard. I think it's okay to rage at the reboot films, because they are an aggressively different beast than the entire franchise. IMHO that is something a fifty year old fandom seriously has every right to complain about. Explosive action flicks starring bumbling moron Kirk who tripped and fell into the Captain's chair while Spock cries and punches people in the background? Nah. Hate on it alllll you want.

My unpopular opinion here would be the endless criticism and wank that poor Enterprise inspires. It is nowhere near as bad a show as the fandom would have you believe, but the internet hate machine churns on. Really undue ire for a four season show that was cancelled almost a decade ago.

I've seen the "entitlement" argument brought up a lot with Star Trek fans though. Quite often, complaints about the new films are dismissed as being due to "bitter" Spirk fans who are angry that they didn't get their way.

As though Spirk fans are the only ones who have issues with the new films…

But thank you for your support! I shall, indeed, continue to hate on the terrible decisions made.

So would you say Doctor Who fans are similarly un-entitled when complaining?

Yep. Same situation.

Oh god, I *so* understand how you feel. I'm all for constructive criticsm but I've just thrown any pretense at being objective out of the window with this one.

See, Stupid shit is always stupid until we have a horse in the race, then we (people as a whole) can always find some reason to justify it as "No, this is different.
I don't like Abrams any more than you, and I do love my old!trek, but let's be honest: Nu!Trek does not make our experiences with star trek any less special. It does not replace the old series. It's a new shot at the series and we feel it's a miss, but we've had so much awesome in the series, we are not owed constant non-stop targeted-just-for-us awesome experiences.
TLDR, I feel you, but we're being dumb entitled brats.

See…I wasn't even an old-school Trek fan when I watched nuTrek. I STARTED with the 2009 film and hated it. And then when I went back and watched TOS…it just made me so angry. Because I do feel…in a way…like Abrams IS tarnishing Trek's legacy because he props up the STUPIDEST caricatures of the characters.

Like Kirk -- holy Christ. He's NOT a womanizer in TOS. He just…isn't. He treats women with respect -- he doesn't use them. Certainly, unless he was under the influence of something, he wouldn't freaking spy on women while they're changing.

And it makes me angry because…why the hell is motherfucking Bob Orci's opinion of Trek more legitimate than mine? He was a fan for years? SO THE FUCK WHAT! So were other people. And yet we have to sit back and watch him EVISCERATE TOS characters and the themes of the original.

I mean -- it's quite an achievement to make films in 2009 and 2013 that are LESS progressive than a show from the 1960s (to say nothing of the TOS films). It really is.

As a former Lostie, I always feel the need to apologize for Lindelof because we really thought he had talent at the time and we gave him way too much validation, and now they just throw money at him wherever he goes. Every time he inflicts himself on an existing franchise now, I want to send sympathy cards to each and every fan. Sorry! Ordinarily, I'm kind of embarrassed by how nasty people can be to creators/writers on Twitter, but I laughed like hell when they ran him off there.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a very kind sentiment. Thank you! :D

Although, honestly, please don't feel like you have to apologize.

Sadly, Lindelof is nowhere near as bad as Orci -- who constantly tells people to fuck off. On twitter, before he deleted his account, he told a man to fuck his own mother because the dude had the nerve to call Orci an idiot for saying that his people should be grateful for the Khan whitewashing.

I feel like they deserve all the hate they get, given the stupidity and callousness they've displayed. Orci, in particular, started with his conspiracy theory bullshit right after the Boston marathon bombings. No shame at all.
