Re: Stupid/naive things you used to think
(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)Like with Africa -- I do think he legitimately cares about the people and the huge issue of AIDS and HIV across the continent. But he allows his religious beliefs to dictate his actions there and, personally speaking, I think it does more harm than good in many ways (although Bush was quite popular in some African nations and not without reason either -- there were success stories).
But it goes back to what I said earlier -- he mistakes wanting to do the right thing with actually Being Right. And that's where I see him fucking up a lot.
Re: Stupid/naive things you used to think
I think he's just really misguided. I can't bring myself to hate him, despite the long-lasting damage he and his administration did. If anything, I'd sooner hate people in his cabinet and in congress who enabled him -- or took advantage of his naivete to their own ends.
And he's actually quite popular in Africa. I think whatever side effects his work there might cause will eventually iron themselves out.
Re: Stupid/naive things you used to think
Ah, memories. Memories that make me look at the picture of John McCain circa the 1990's that I have on my mantle and weep. We could have had it all.
Re: Stupid/naive things you used to think
(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)I actually think Cheney ENJOYS the comparisons to Darth Vader -- he likes being seen as powerful and effective.
But, scarily enough, I think he also believes that what he's doing is RIGHT for America. That freaks me out a bit. He seems like the type of man to scream "You can't handle the truth!"
