For an embarrassingly long time I thought the "GOP" was some kind of organization affiliated with the Republican Party (for non-US people, it's a nickname for the Republican Party). So I'd see stuff in the papers about "the GOP" and think "I should probably look up what that is sometime" but didn't get around to it for a while, because I didn't think it could be that important.

Same... though I do still feel like there's a difference between Republicans everyday and those people CALL the GOP. I mean, I know a lesbian who is a Republican. Clearly she's not against same-sex marriage.

I thought it was a journalist acronym for "Government Opposing Party," so that the president was a Democrat, the Republicans were the GOP and vice versa.
