Stupid/naive things you used to think

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by a news briefing on the earthquake in California, where there's a "state of emergency." When I was a teenager, I thought it meant "the state has had an emergency." As in, "Florida: Currently a state of emergency."

Yeah... anyone else any dumber than I was?

For the longest time when I heard about One Direction, I thought they were referring to New Directions from Glee and was always so confused.

I thought it was a show or an anime, because people kept mentioning its fandom and I didn't immediately relate fandom to a music-related fanbase.

I still confuse One Direction and OneRepublic sometimes.

Let's be honest, Florida is constantly in a state of emergency.

Was gonna say, Florida kind of IS a state of emergency.

Welp...I thought "death by chocolate" would actually kill you. And also for years I read "Heath Bar" as "Health Bar" and believed it was some sort of healthy granola bar. Thus, for the longest time, I wanted nothing to do with it.

I used to think that when you got a pizza that was like...half pepperoni and half supreme that they made two FULL pizzas and the just put half of each into your box.

I thought Bush invented the concept of an administration (i.e. "the Bush administration") because he was that full of himself.

Oh yeah, I loved Bush, can't you tell?

I used to think that the world was in black and white before the invention of color movies/tv. Which doesn't explain stuff like the Wizard of Oz and all those beautiful colotful paintings from history and other stuff. I was a stupid kid.

As a child when first hearing about homosexuality, seeing how there weren't any same sex couple around me and buying the nuclear family bullshit fed to us by society, I conflated it with transsexuality and came to the conclusion that one of the pair just HAD to crossdress.
Then I started to wonder what would happen if a girl dressed as a boy and a boy dressed as a girl came to fall in love with each other.

When I was very little and I saw old people out and about by themselves, I thought they must have no family or friends and I felt sad for them. As far as I was concerned - with typical little kid self-centeredness - my grandparents had no lives outside of me, like they ceased to exist when I wasn't around, so when I saw old people unacompanied I assumed it was because they didn't have anyone in their lives and not that they were just running errands and had no reason to bring people along.

I used to think of myself as dirty and awful for liking the idea of licking genitals - namely, the vagina and the penis. I would draw lots of awful porn and hid or destroyed them to hide from the world how depraved I was.
Yeah.

When I was a kid and there was a clown at a street fair or something, I'd always think "that's not a real clown, it's just a person dressed as one."

For an embarrassingly long time I thought the "GOP" was some kind of organization affiliated with the Republican Party (for non-US people, it's a nickname for the Republican Party). So I'd see stuff in the papers about "the GOP" and think "I should probably look up what that is sometime" but didn't get around to it for a while, because I didn't think it could be that important.

I started actually watching baseball several years back. It took me until I think last year, when I didn't have cable and had to listen to the regional team's games on the radio instead, to realize that it wasn't "sack fly" as in "fly ball that went really high and then dropped into the fielder's glove like it was falling into a sack", but "sac fly", as in "batter sacrifices himself via fly ball out to get an existing runner in".

I grew up in a pretty sexist culture. To make matters worse, I was an aro-ace, so I had no personal experience with romance/sexual attraction. Long story short, my teen!self showed some amazing levels of hilarious casual sexism - I still want to cringe into a void when reading the fanfic I used to write back then. Assumptions like "every girl who sees a handsome guy is going to be immediately smitten" and other things along these lines.

That's not too far off from the truth, though xD

When I was a really little kid, I thought cheese was a vegetable, and eggs were a dairy product.

I thought the reason cats didn't walk on their hind legs was because no one had ever bothered to teach them. I spent many months trying to train my cats to walk on two legs.

I thought "baby" was a dirty word. If I heard someone say it, I would correct them.

I thought that, if you got yourself close enough to the ground, then people couldn't see you. For example, in pre-school, I once tried to sneak from one room to the next by crawling on the floor (I remember this incident vividly, even though I was very young, because it changed my worldview).

I thought my parents had come into being as adults. Sure, I was growing older and would one day be an adult, but people who were parents had always been grown-ups and had never, ever been kids.

I thought "it's easier" meant "it's better," so if I liked something to be done a certain way, I'd tell people they should do it because "it's easier," even if it was vastly more complicated and difficult than what they'd already been doing.

I know I have a bunch more, but I can't think of them right now.

When I was quite young, I thought one of the dudes from CCR was my bio dad. Why? Because my mum told me she'd gotten their Green River LP from the bio dad and add in the fact that I had (and still have) no idea what my bio dad looks like...my child brain assumed he had to be one of the dudes in the pic. (My bio parents were never married.)

Also, when I was kid, I used to think that even numbers were good and odd numbers were evil, to the point I'd only take even amounts of things whenever possible.

When I was young (several decades ago or so), I remember listening to the radio news and hearing about guerillas holding a road against the local military. The young me didn't or couldn't differentiate between "guerillas" and "gorillas". I had some very intense mental images based on the original Planet of the Apes movies, as you might imagine.

Sometimes it still catches me off guard for just a moment when I hear reports of unrest in other parts of the world.

(I might add that my mother had a number of simian pets when I was young, including a Celebese Ape and some smaller New World monks. Young me thought that they were amazing and probably would eventually take over the world as predicted.)

I used to think "oral sex" was a synonym for dirty talk, because when I asked my aunt what it was (they were talking about Bill Clinton around a 7 year old) she told me it was "talking about sex."

I also used to think Gumby was some kind of really subversive, adult show, because my older brother would never let me watch it, and normally he would censor my tv viewing more than my parents. Turns out he just really hated Gumby.
