I thought Bush invented the concept of an administration (i.e. "the Bush administration") because he was that full of himself.

Oh yeah, I loved Bush, can't you tell?

He's actually a very nice man on a personal level.

Bush's biggest problem as a leader is that he wants to do the right thing no matter what. But he can't seem to realize that this DOESN'T mean that whatever he does is right, no matter what it is.

If that makes sense.

How do you know he's a nice man? Do you know of him personally through someone or something? This isn't sarcasm, just curious.

I know someone who worked directly for him for two years.

He was military and said Bush was always really nice to the guys.

Invited them to watch a movie instead of leaving them in the helicopter as an example.

His superior actually thought it was a random dude knocking at the door, and cussed them out, but it was actually Bush with a bowl of popcorn!

Bush took it all in stride though. He's a very nice fellow apparently. And my friend also told me that any and all of them would willingly die many times over for Laura Bush. Hillary Clinton is another story though! (He worked for Clinton as well).

Always fear a leader who is really nice to the military. Fear even more one who is beloved by them in return.

To be honest, whether they're military or not, I do think it's good that he treats them like human beings. Those in power who treat those under their command like disposable units instead of people will always be worse to me. How someone treats a person they don't HAVE to be nice to and who is below them in a hierarchical system says a lot about them (though not everything).

Mind you, that doesn't make 90% of Bush's decisions less jaw-droppingly stupid and/or immoral. But he's not a cartoon villain.

I'd rather he (and any leader) treated them as soldiers TBH. They ARE disposable.

Fuck off.

Seriously. If soldiers are disposable then so is everyone else and there's nothing to complain about in terms of Bush's policy.

I think it boils down to the assumption that nobody in the office of President in the last hundred years has been actually evil (well, maybe Nixon and Bush Sr.) though they may have evil people working for them, like Dick Cheney, who's a Bond villain if I ever saw one.

Have you ever seen W's paintings? They're almost sweet in their amateurishness. And he's got a very gentle demeanor about him that reminds me a lot of my uncle Tom (they even look similar, which is a bit eerie.) Also, compare his ice bucket challenge video to Paul Ryan voting to cut ALS research funding and then doing his own video. I never thought I'd be nostalgic for the GOP of 2002, but holy fuck.

Re: Stupid/naive things you used to think

Bush actually does care. A lot. It's just his way of caring often makes things WORSE.

Like with Africa -- I do think he legitimately cares about the people and the huge issue of AIDS and HIV across the continent. But he allows his religious beliefs to dictate his actions there and, personally speaking, I think it does more harm than good in many ways (although Bush was quite popular in some African nations and not without reason either -- there were success stories).

But it goes back to what I said earlier -- he mistakes wanting to do the right thing with actually Being Right. And that's where I see him fucking up a lot.

The road to hell, etc.

I think he's just really misguided. I can't bring myself to hate him, despite the long-lasting damage he and his administration did. If anything, I'd sooner hate people in his cabinet and in congress who enabled him -- or took advantage of his naivete to their own ends.

And he's actually quite popular in Africa. I think whatever side effects his work there might cause will eventually iron themselves out.

Bush was fine. Darth Cheney on the other hand...there is evil incarnate.

Ah, memories. Memories that make me look at the picture of John McCain circa the 1990's that I have on my mantle and weep. We could have had it all.

Re: Stupid/naive things you used to think

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I get the feeling that Cheney sees himself as a pragmatist in a sea of hopeless idealists who is the one keeping them safe in their beds by doing what needs to be done. And if he makes a profit off of it, well, all the better for him (in his own mind at least).

I actually think Cheney ENJOYS the comparisons to Darth Vader -- he likes being seen as powerful and effective.

But, scarily enough, I think he also believes that what he's doing is RIGHT for America. That freaks me out a bit. He seems like the type of man to scream "You can't handle the truth!"

Re: Stupid/naive things you used to think

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
It does. If you mean that just because he thought it is the right thing to do didn't mean it actually was the right thing to do. He did what he thought was right. Most of the time I didn't agree with him.

I never really thought he was a bad or evil man, he was just clueless as to what went on in the real world.

I thought my toys were alive and they just didn't move while I was in the room. Toy Story may have contributed to that belief.

Edit: Whoops, I meant to reply to the OP's post. Sorry about that!

I never thought that about my toys, but I thought it was true of some toys in stores.
