I've... honestly found that a lot of people who say "I don't care if you disagree with me" actually care more than people who don't say it. (I am one of those people who says that, but I... actually mean it? I have friends who say it and yet they totally care, though.)

Yeah, it's like how all the people who say they hate drama are intensely dramatic

I sort of think you hit the nail on the head here.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think so. On average anyway.

I had a college professor like that! The first day of school she emphasized on the syllabus AND in class how all opinions were welcome. So one day I admitted to being in fandom (it was relevant to the conversation) - next thing I knew, I was going to end up being murdered, and everyone on the internet was a moron. I didn't express an opinion that wasn't "I agree" after that.

Yup, it certainly seems to be the case more often than not.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
no kidding. :( i felt like i was their token "opposite opinion" person.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't follow what's going on here. OP's friends said they didn't mind OP having different opinions, but then kicked OP out to... seek their own kind or something?

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
they say they didn't mind me having opposite opinions but they "punish" me for having them by ignoring my existence entirely.

Generally, people who don't care won't care enough to tell you that they don't care. If they're telling you, they're just trying to convince themselves.

OP

i'm finding this out the hard way, i guess...

If they're calling you a moron on a public forum, they're not really your friends.

This.

You should retweet that and add: "Right back at ya, Bee-yotch." See what happens.

yes

Basically this. Damn rude, these “friends” of yours. :( I hope you find better people to hang out with.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I had to figure that out the hard way; find new fandom friends. These ones don't have your back.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yooooou got it.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
yeah....

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
So... You want your friends to have the same opinions as you? I can see that, but obviously it's not to be. You may want to seek out people who share your opinions. Plus yeah, like others have said, people who talk shit about you like that aren't your friends.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
i don't want to find like-minded people because i like discussion and i like talking about something (fandom or otherwise) that we may not agree with but trying to understand the other side.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
If your friends think it's okay to insult and bully people because of a difference of opinion in fandom, then they weren't very good people to begin with.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
you're right. you're absolutely right.

OP (Update on situation)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
so, i made this secret a while ago but while i was waiting for this to be posted, i had enough. i completely deleted my twitter (where i would get the brunt of it) and tried to contact the ones that i felt were good to me.

i miss twitter but it's an addiction for me plus, they were so goddamn negative and hurtful.

like if i tweeted something that "oh hey my boss hurt my feelings today" (or really, anything that hurts me physically or emotionally). no one would really give a shit. but if something happened to someone they agreed with, suddenly, it's a change.org matter.

and i've addressed with them before. the only time they give a shit though is when i'm criticizing them.

"oh, i don't do that! YOU'RE OUR FRIEND." and it's so hilarious too that they're all social justice warriors as well. they get mad when i don't really follow the hive mind, literally.

and this is a problem i've always had. this is why i have no friends. i don't think like everyone else do and i'm sick of it... i want to think like everyone else so i can finally be welcomed...

honestly, right now, the hard part is realizing that: yes, these people were not your friends and never really did have my best interest at heart. i just don't know where to begin again...

Re: OP (Update on situation)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry OP, it really does sound like they weren't great friends to begin with.

I think you can find friends who will be better to you, it will just take some time. Also look out for the warning signs of "hive mind" people, I never have an easy time being friends with people who all think a like, because they tend to turn and gang up on others too quickly. Try looking for a crowd that may have a common thread or two but is otherwise full of individuals with their own opinions. Those are the type of people who tend to be really fun.
