HOWEVER, he was better at writing characters than Moffat.

Yes, this, exactly this! I don't think RTD used to write bad plots, though, he had his moments (just like Moffat) but RTD had a better grasp on personality differences and the uniqueness of his characters. Moffat's characters all seem annoyingly the same to me, most of the time.

Like, it's hard to see any differences between Amy and Clara apart from one of them being slightly taller and having a boyfriend. While Rose, Martha and Donna, for example, all had different characters, even different thinking and different appearances, which was much more refreshing and nicer.

Still with the possibility of Jenna/Clara leaving on Christmas, I'm curious as to what kind of companion Moffat will choose for the Doctor this time. I hope it's not another one whom he thought looked hot enough without even bothering to check their acting skills first.

I thought that "Is Clara leaving?" article that got linked the other day said that 12 was getting a male Companion ...

... which I predict will be seen by the nutters as fueling "Doctor Who's Secret Gay Agenda" or somesuch.

It would seem just about time to bring a male companion into the show that isn't linked with a female lover or something.
Still, you can never run away from that either way, but it'd be fun while it lasts.

Well, I'm not sure if it's necessarily that Amy/Clara are really alike so much as Clara has next to no personality, so she's kind of like everyone. I think if Clara came right after Rose or Martha, you might argue they're a lot alike, since Clara's personality is basically Stock Companion (brave, smart, feisty, caring).

However, Amy and River are very different. Various other female characters have been different from Amy as well.

I don't know if River should be considered as a Moffat character? Sure, she had her "character development" during his run, but the basis of her personality sort of started during RTD's era and all that Moffat had to do, it seemed to me, was try and make her fit right in his seasons.
But how can River not be the same too? Wasn't she the one 'born to kill the Doctor'? And Clara was the one to save him? And Amy was 'the girl who waited (for the Doctor)'?

If Clara came right after Rose and Martha, it would be different. She'd be the only one who knew the Doctor beforehand. Her mystery would've been something new. True, Clara had the perfect characteristics of a companion, you might argue, but Rose and Martha didn't.
I also dislike how Moffat's female characters all have to fancy his Doctor because he's the most awesome thing, in his opinion.

All of River's episodes have been written by Moffat. She's been his from the start.

Right, sorry. Forgot to double check on that. Huh, this actually explains a lot of things then. Well, anyway, I've never been such a fan of her from the start. I was curious about her after the library episodes, but then the 'born to kill the doctor' and her suddenly being Amy and Rory's daughter ruined it all for me.
