Re: what remakes do you prefer to the originals?

I totally get why people might like the remakes better than TOS:

-TOS is very campy
-The effects and music are better in the new films
-Different characters get more screen time
-Some characters are more likable depending on the actor (I know Shatner tends to rub some people the wrong way)
-The new films fun and exciting (I know some people just find TOS tedious or boring)

That being said, I criticize the remakes because, to me, they betray what Star Trek is fundamentally about and have really mischaracterized some of the characters in ways I despise.

But I'm glad people enjoy them. I just wish I could like them better.

No, it's actually even simpler than that-- TOS is too optimistic, and that rubs me the wrong way. I don't like the concept of a force that is Always Right (Starfleet in general), and admittedly I like a little grit in the system. That's why I vastly prefer later seasons of TNG, and DS9 is my absolute favorite. The remake movies...there are a lot of issues, for sure, but the whole thing feels more real and less preachy to me, which is what appeals to me.

I never got the impression that Starfleet was always right though. There were plenty of times in the series where the higher-ups were dicks or just flat out wrong about something. Like in the Ultimate Computer when they try to completely automate the Enterprise and a ship ends up destroyed because of it. To say nothing of the films.

I think that sense of optimism is integral to Trek, though.

I'll certainly take TOS's optimism over Bob Orci's nutter conspiracy theory nonsense any day of the week.

Oh, I don't mean to sound judgmental or anything! It's definitely a "to each their own" thing; I feel like Trek vastly improved once it let go of the relentless optimism, but I can easily see why someone else would prefer it. And it's absolutely Roddenberry's original vision.

I'll give you the TOS films, though-- I quite liked those!
