Re: what remakes do you prefer to the originals?

I have a whole list of superlative covers:

Cyndi Lauper, I Drove All Night (vs. overproduced Roy Orbison given probably the worst backup arrangement to slouch out of the 80s.)

Patti Smith, Because the Night (retools the lyrics over what was yet another "fuck me because I'm a working class guy" by Springsteen, and puts it on a higher sexual and spiritual level.)

Johnny Cash, Personal Jesus (the Man in Black shows how its done, with Rubin providing the perfect translation from pretentious electropop to honky tonk.)

David Bowie, Cactus (I'm biased. I like the Pixies, I love Bowie.)

Animals, House of the Rising Sun and Don't Let me Be Misunderstood (middle-of-the-road for Simone, superlative for Burdon and the Animals)

Joe Cocker, Come Together (It works better for Cocker.)

Rasputina, If Your Kisses Don't Hold the Man You Love (two cellos giving new life to a song my grandparents danced to, (probably your great-grandparents))

What?! Someone else sang "The House of the Rising Sun" other than the Animals? I really had no idea. And yes, I agree, superlative is the word for that one.

Looking it up, "House of the Rising Sun" was first recorded as a Kentucky folk ballad in 1937. "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" was written for Nina Simone, who recorded both prior to the version by The Animals.
