what remakes do you prefer to the originals?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Or like just as well.

I like the Brendan Frasier Mummy waaay better than the original, and i never got inti the Transformers tv series but live the movies. (I have a weakness for sexy sexy robots so that's probably why!)

Obvious one: The Maltese Falcon with Humphrey Bogart.

I also prefer the new Karate Kid, even though it should be called The Kung Fu Kid.

Yes on The Maltese Falcon. The cast MADE the movie.

Shameless US is better than the original British version... Which should count?

It also gave us this line:

okay the last part really doesn't have much to do with it, but I am organizing gifs. and found this one and I wanted an excuse to use it...

The Karate Kid. I just can't care about a competition between high schoolers who train at a place that's besides the Laundromat, while the new one treats martial arts seriously.

Nirvana covers. I really appreciate the lyrics, but something about the sound just never clicked with me. At worst, I get headaches from crunchy guitars. The Polyphonic Spree cover of Lithium is amazing.

I like the True Grit remake more. The movie version of My Sister's Keeper was 100x better. Little Shop of Horrors.

Some like it hot. Yes, it's a remake.

Being Human. I think the writers in the remake took the premise and squeezed every supernatural drop out of it that they could.

Being Human US. I could only get through the first season of the British one but I devoured the US one.

John Carpenter's The Thing is much better than the 1951 version.

The Parent Trap from 1998. I owned both that and the original on VHS and I really liked both, but I liked the '98 version a wee bit more.

Dawn of the Dead. I know, I know, sacrilege, I don't care. I like Romero's Night of the Living Dead, I like Land of the Dead, but the original Dawn is horribly dated at this point. The effects look awful, the characters suck (so does their acting) and the pacing is slower than a Romero zombie.

The American version of the Office. The British one came off as boring plus Ricky Gervais was so freaking butthurt that The Office here did better, probably because it's actually funny.

And this isn't a preference, but I do like Otep's version of Breed.

I also like the version of Freaky Friday from the 90's with Shelley Long. The one with Lindsay Lohan give me secondhand embarrassment because of that scene where they sing "Hit Me One More Time" like it's not a bad Britney Spears cover or something. So I like one remake version and think the other is meh.

John Carpenter's The Thing is one of my favorite movies of all time--it was a remake of The Thing From Another World, which was an adaptation itself.

I have a whole list of superlative covers:

Cyndi Lauper, I Drove All Night (vs. overproduced Roy Orbison given probably the worst backup arrangement to slouch out of the 80s.)

Patti Smith, Because the Night (retools the lyrics over what was yet another "fuck me because I'm a working class guy" by Springsteen, and puts it on a higher sexual and spiritual level.)

Johnny Cash, Personal Jesus (the Man in Black shows how its done, with Rubin providing the perfect translation from pretentious electropop to honky tonk.)

David Bowie, Cactus (I'm biased. I like the Pixies, I love Bowie.)

Animals, House of the Rising Sun and Don't Let me Be Misunderstood (middle-of-the-road for Simone, superlative for Burdon and the Animals)

Joe Cocker, Come Together (It works better for Cocker.)

Rasputina, If Your Kisses Don't Hold the Man You Love (two cellos giving new life to a song my grandparents danced to, (probably your great-grandparents))

Fright Night. I mean, I love the original to bits but I much prefer the remake because it's grittier (can we still use that word or is it over already?), and I like how much agency Amy has, how proactive and such. Thank you Jane Espenson.

Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt. I've heard both. Johnny Cash's version is about regret at the end of a long life. Trent Reznor's about someone who's just broken. I much, much prefer the former.

Don't know if this counts as a remake, but they both adapted the same thing. And the Dune tv miniseries simply owns compared to the David Lynch version.

Also, Suchet's Poirot is the best Poirot. Period. Don't think anyone would disagree with this.

I'm also going to agree with the person who said the Star Trek reboots. Sorry. My favorites are still always and forever Deep Space Nine and Voyager, but the Original Series is just too campy for me and the acting too laughable. I just can't get over William Shatner.

The Sabrina remake with Harrison Ford and Greg Kinnear. Admittedly, I've never seen the original, but I also have no interest in doing so because it seems so boring to me, whereas the remake is such a perfect, lovely movie in so many ways.

Whole Line is it Anyway US version.

Yeah, I was surprised when someone told me it was a remake from the UK. (And no, I'm not from the US).

3:10 to Yuma. I liked the old one, but the remake had this wonderful version of Charlie Prince.
