I've recommended this before, but I always thought William Gibson's books (particularly his first three and his three most recent) make for an easy, fast read. That is, in order: Neuromancer, Count Zero Interrupt, and Mona Lisa Overdrive for his 80s trilogy, and Pattern Recognition, Spook Country and Zero History for his 00s trilogy.

His middle three books... are a bit denser, and I don't like them as much. That's Virtual Light, Idoru and All Tomorrow's Parties.

These are all trilogies, btw, so best to read them in the order listed.

I'll second Neuromancer, my sister brought it with her when we did a week long cruise and we both read it pretty quickly while sitting up on the deck.
